I will be attending my Grand Daughters Carols in the Park on Sunday night and am unsure of the correct settings for my D60 (with 55-200 VR f/4-5.6) at night under fluro lights. Should I use the 18-55 VR f3.5-5.6 instead?

I think the on board flash will be virtually useless in the conditions, and I would prefer to shoot manual to keep the flash locked down.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hi John,

I am not shure about your lens choice as i dont know what sort of pictures you will take. The 18-55 VR is very fine ( own it myself ) as a general lens. The 55-200 VR is more for close up (portraits) and tele work.

I would advice to shoot RAW to be able to repair WB errors ( mixed light sources .. ), do exposure compensation and/or change picture control settings afterworths on pc ( even with ViewNX free Nikon sw this possible !! ).

The built in flash can be used as fill-in ( you can also give + or - flash compensation ) for certain situations ( portraits eg ) , so i would not say it is totally useless.

Goog luck with your shooting on sunday night !! Show us some results ??

You will probably need at least ISO 800, but may need as much as 1600, in which case your results will have some noise. Try ISO 800 - 1600, I'd try f/4-f/5.6 and 1/80-1/100 sec. If the lighting conditions are changing a lot during the performance, try AutoISO, with either of the ISO 800 or 1600 as your max.

I'm basing this on how I've gotten reasonable results for indoor stage-lit performances with my VR18-200 and VR16-85 lenses.

And set your WB to fluorescent if you don't want to tweak color as much in PP.

Happy shooting.

I had my D200 stolen and I am back with my D70 and although I have the ISO set at 200, In the viewfinder and (flashing) on the top screen it says AUTO ISO?

When I press the ISO button (next to LCD) it says 200.

I have not shot with my D70 in years and maybe I forgot something??

Help..........

A photograph is more than a bunch of pixels

These are a few pics of the grand daughter at the carols. I had to use the 55-200 as I couldn't get close to use the 18-55. Used the ob flash and iso 800. They are noisey as I had to crop a fair bit.

I agree with Morris about needing to fix the colors, but no problem if you did not shoot in raw. They are easily fixed on a jpeg image also.

I just done the auto adjust of the colours and the results are great, thanks for the comments.
