Office Depot has marked down several cameras, many under $100. Not listed on their site that I could see. I snagged an LZ8 for $89. I ran the camera through my battery of tests, and it is a keeper. Good feature set and zoom range on this little gem. Some other stores want as much as $60 more.

And somewhere I saw that OfficeDepot has a coupon $20 off a $75 purchase...wonder if it can be used on cameras. If so, I hope they have some LZ8's in stock.

But first I need to remember where I saw that coupon.

This is a great resource for saving $

I found the code for online savings of $20 off $75 BUT....

$20 OFF YOUR ORDER OF $75 OR MORE! (EXCLUDES TECHNOLOGY)

So I don't think you can use it.

By the way, the LZ8 was just selected as the best budget camera by DPReview in there just released Holiday Shopping roundup.

I just went to the Office Depot site but can't find it. Could someone give a specific link for it on their site; I'm ready to buy.

When I went to my nearest OD, they only had the display model. Ask them to check stock on near by stores. their system is real time and shows the number in stock including the demo. The salesman found two new in boxes at a store across down, so off I went. Don't wait, a loaded camera like this for under $100 will sell out quick.

I should add that they seem to have only the black one at $89. They didn't carry the silver version.

I went to my local Office Depot and the camera was $129, marked down from $149.

You owe me $6.00 for gas.

Amazon.com has is currently selling the black LZ8 for $99 and the silver for $119. It really is not that much more, for such a good quality budget camera.

Sorry about that. I guess it may be regional. Better call first.

Macro mode works good ;-)

All discount coupons from OfficeDepot are a scam, IMO.

Read the fine print (4-pt. type). Technology products are excluded. They include computers and cameras, and account for approx 40% of the products sold by OfficeDepot.

I won't shop OfficeDepot because of the Technology exclusion. For paperclips and No. 2 pencils, I'll shop at the nearby Dollar Tree store.

I usually pass by the clearance shelves at my local Office Depot figuring whatever camera there would not be worthy. Today I stopped at three of them and none of them had any clearance cameras nor could any salesperson verify that they ever carried the LZ8. I'll try another two tomorrow.

Here's a question: we all know that the LZ8 won that budget camera shootout here on DPReview but compared to the winner of their next shootout is it still a "worthy" camera? Who knows, maybe in the next tier of budget camera shootout, say, under $200 in their next comparo , that winner will be well worth the extra bucks over the LZ8. I've got four ebay cameras I paid under $100 each that are better than the LZ8. Of course, I don't have an LZ8 to compare it to...must buy the LZ8 so I can compare!

OK, next question: anybody out there actually have an LZ8 besides the OP? How does it really compare to more expensive cameras, regardless of how thin they are or pink-like they are in color.

I guess I have this dream that an $89 LZ5 is the moral equivalent of my TZ5 with a little less zoom.

J&R has it for $99 - no tax unless you live in NY. Their shipping is reasonable - if you live in NJ it's $6.95 and arrives the day after it's shipped which is 1-2 business days after purchase. My orders usually go out the next day. However, they had huge Black Friday weekend and Cyber Monday sales so my order from last night won't ship until tomorrow.

Great place to do business IMO.

I usually use a DSLR, but I have a Canon SD600 as a pocket camera. The Canon works fine as a snapshot people camera. But if I see a really nice scene to shoot, I just didn't bother using the Canon. I was too spoiled by the IQ of my DSLR. The Canon turned into a strictly emergency camera.

About 6 weeks ago I bought the LZ8 for $99 from J&R. It was an impulse buy. I really didn't expect too much from the camera. I was actually shocked at the great IQ from this camera, and it had manual controls as a bonus. Now if I see a nice scene, I have no problem using this small great camera. The IQ is so good, I only regretted it not having a viewfinder (I thought the camera would be another 'emergency' camera, not a 'real' camera).

I was so impressed with Panasonic, I bought a FZ28 last week..heheh. Now I have a viewfinder. It is also a great camera. My DSLR is getting left at home a lot now.

I have a Nikon D50. A few months ago my girlfriend and I were looking at the FZ28. She wants one (she is used to my old 10x zoom Oly C770 superzoom, and the FZ28 is way more responsive and has IS). We ended up getting her the FZ8 "for her purse". I've been pretty impressed with the little beast, and like you, the only thing I really miss with it is a viewfinder. Now, how can I get the FZ28 without my girlfriend stealing it all of the time??? Lol!

Cheers,

I picked up a LZ8 at big lots this weekend. Went in to get my grandson a FS3 on sale for $88, and ended up coming home with the FS3 and LZ8. So far I'm pretty impressed with both of them. If the darn things just had a viewfinder they would be really great. My old Canon S400 had just recently died and I needed another pocket cam. The feature set of the LZ8 is really great and image quality is much better than my old canon S400. I am used to my nikon dslr's so I can see a difference in IQ from what I'm used to, but for a pocket cam the panasonic's are pretty amazing. Now does anybody know where I can drill a hole through the body to look through so I can hold the thing up against my face with my arms braced to chest like you're supposed to hold a camera. That is the worst thing so far about the Panny, just cannot hold a camera still without bracing against body and face.

I really don't think the next step up camera will really be worth the money. Especially if you can find the LZ8 for $100ish. I have had at least 20 digital cameras so far and I agree with DPR that they are all pretty good nowdays in good light and have been for a few years.

I would take a big step up from the LZ8 or none at all.

So I went into the Office Depot I usually go to...and there was an LZ8 on display. "$89.99" said the big yellow card. Now you know and I know that none of us needs more cameras but I bought it anyway. It's a sickness. They had two new in the back and I got one of them.

It's like a mini-TZ5. Venus 4, 32 wide 5x optical. Manual control if you so desire! It's freaky holding the thing in my hand, it's like my TZ5. You go into the menus and it's pretty near the same. It weighs 198 grams including SD card and two AA batteries. It's going to need some Egrips on it because it's black and slickery. It sez "Leica DC Vario-Elmar 3.3-5.9" which sounds like a pretty slow lens on both ends. Is it really a Leica lens or did Panasonic just borrow the name and specs? How about IQ you ask. I'll get back to you on that one after I do a mini-shootout of my own with the LZ8 and my Canon SD cameras.
