Eight thousand dollars?!

Street price in Norway Dec 1st: NOK 69.990
= GBP (£) 6,666
= USD (£) 9,942
(today's exchange rates)

I guess I will be able to fly to the US, and still save some money......

During recessions usually marketing budgets are cut drastically.
Recessions are the time for bean counters. Just watch the relation of
open positions in your country for marketing managers in relation to
finance managers.
The relative umbers shows an increased demand for maketing directors in that comparion. (The absolut numbers are off course in favour for Financial sector, but thet is a larger area in terms of people)

My sales are up almost 50% in the high end markets since the US financial crises started. I hope for a severe recession that will last for years ;)

Consumer sales are probably down though, I wouldn't want to depend on private sales for my living...
Don't know about the US, but over here, commercial shooting is
gaining a lot due to the recession. Companies spend more money to
sell than what they used to.

It's not a camera aimed for the masses, and I figure that Nikon will
quite easily sell each body they have capacity to produce, which
would indicate that the price is right.

I saw some early images from the camera and not counting the Digital
MF cameras with photosites 9 microns or larger, it can comfortably
compete with all cameras made this far on quality. And remeber, it
does come with an F-mount :) That's a whole bunch of money saved
right there.

that the D3 sells for a grand off. Once the suckers have been creamed, so will the D3x. So the difference is two grand, not three. I still agree they'll have trouble shifting them at that though. A grand would sound plausible.

but there are other tools available for much less. They'll certainly sell some, but not that many I don't think. But, equally, I don't think the price will stick.

4) the IQ of the 3Dx is so overwhelmingly good that people will buy it, regardless of the price. Who knows, the camera was announced yesterday.

5) the European list price of the Canon 1DsIII is approx. $11'000, compared to that, the 3Dx is cheap.

Is that price possibly for real?

The economy is collapsing and they want to charge 8 grand for this
camera? Did they somehow miss the memo that commercial photographers
are in a world of hurt with all the ad and marketing dollars being
frozen?

I guess now we know what the "Big" part of the announcement was --
the price!
Sorry, but what i have seen thus far, the d3x is leaps over the a900 and zeiss is just as good as nikon's best, so no difference there!

Very stubborn crowd here. A quick online price check puts the Canon 1DsIII in the $10'000 price range. And that, quite a while after it was released, so the initial price probably has already came down. The 3Dx's specs are comparable and it's a generation younger and still lists $2K lower. What actually are you asking for? If you are charging $1'800 to shoot a wedding, will you do it for me for $1'200 because I think you're too expensive and can't afford your full price? No? I thought not.

US$8K converted to Australian and add 10% GST (sales tax) = about AU$13,300K

The D3 currently sells for AU$5,950 with tax as they seem to be holding prices when the dollar was much higher (our dollar as gone from US95c to US66c recently...)

For an impending economic depression the price of the nikon D3X is way too high.

A lot of you think I am joking!!

Nikon, you guys are reading these forums closely to gauge reactions - take note of most posters complaints and therefore loss of sales/revenue of this new camera.

Better to set a reasonable price and gererate volume sales and income, rather than the occasional sale.

cheers

Ron

On what do you base that on? The images released by Nikon are hardly likely to be lemons any more than sony's samples weren't. Until there are true side by side comparisions i would say its a bit early to make these sort of comments although you may eventually be proved correct.............

They are crazy. With the 5D MkII out at that price, they charge such a price... And, well, it's not the price per se, but the price compared to what the camera offer more than the concurrence that stikes me: yes, the body is better than the alfa900 or the 5DmkII, but... 5000 dollars better?

This is a niche camera and Nikon will sell everyone they make. Canons have been at this price point for years. Since the D3, which seemed like the D2h replacement was priced at the flagship (at the time) price of $5k, I knew Nikon was preparing to introduce a new price point for their "x" version when it arrived.

Once again, the camera will produce incredible images just as ever new Nikon always has. This is aimed at a very small segment of the market and they will happily pay the price.
