Its been about a year since I've posted in the Canon Talk Forum. I've been in the 40D and 1D Forums. But I just bought a G10 P&S to replace my A640, and I'm truly excited about this new little camera. I owned a G7 two years ago for about one week before I exchanged it for my A640. But this G10 is truly amazing. I love the image quality, the sharp, beautiful LCD screen, the menu layout, its operational ease, the dedicated EC and ISO wheels, the improved grip and Servo AF. The IS system is very good too, I've taken many indoor shots at 1/4 sec shutter speed that are as sharp as a flash shot at 1/60. Not to mention the 28mm wide angle lens. Canon definitely has a winner with this camera. Totally happy with this one, as i know many of you are too that have this camera. Just wanted to share my thoughts. :o)

Glad your enjoying your new camera. I struggled with the G10 or Panasonic LX3, decided to go the Panny route seeing that I already have the Canon S5 for my telephoto needs. I know we will be seeing some wonderful samples from you.

Brian,

I've gone out and done the exact same thing as you last night. I have used and enjoyed my Canon A640 for the past year. I print a lot of invitations and posters so the 10 MP was great for me. I have been debating, like most people, between the Lumix LX3 and the G10 for a while. I went with the G10 and I'm blown away! I've only had a few hours to play with it last and got some pretty good shots in the dark. I'm still learning all the functions, but it blows the A640 out of the water.

Enjoy the camera :)

Matt

Thanks for the good word on G10 Bryan. I feel the same. It is a fine camera. I sure am enjoying mine.

I just can't get over the beautiful LCD screen, hugh improvement over the A640. The AWB setting when shooting in Incandescent lighting seems to be alot better than previous Canon P&S cameras. Mine is giving me similar results whether I use AWB or the Incandescent preset. I like the focus check review screen and Face Detect AF. The A640 didn't have these functions. The live histogram is great, too. The clock display is a nice touch, too. The Red Eye correction function seems to work very well so far. No red eye yet in any of my flash portraits. Will try to post some shots by Sunday. Not that any of my photos need to be seen to change anyone's mind about this camera. It speaks for itself.

But again, the most important result for me, as for most of you as well, is image quality. The photos from this G10 are extremely sharp, color is accurate and vivid, and saturation and contrast are very well controlled.

This camera should receive "Camera of the Year" awards for features, innovations and image quality.

Guess I need to change my signature below and remove the A650IS and add the G10. :o)

i quite agree, great litlte camera, forget limitation ...all cameras have limits, but imagianation and creativity do not.

You will have to convince the staff at dpreview first! :)

Lots of enthusiasts will have fun with this little brick.

Bryan, you mentioned the histogram. I want a good, easy to see histogram. The shots of the G10 histogram shown on the internet make it look washed out, faint, and hard to see (especially in the sun). Is there a setting that will make it easier to see, perhaps a solid yellow, black, or some other combination of colors?

Does the camera have blinking highlights, either live or in image review?

Thanks in advance

I have the a640 too and am thinging about the g10, I miss the IS. Do you see any real improvement in IQ over the a640. The a640 had a highly recommended from dp review.

In my very preliminary comparison of the two cameras in the past two days, I would say that both the G10 and A640 have very similar sharpness, color and contrast qualities (maybe a slight edge to the G10), but the G10 does seem to provide a slight bit more fine detail due to its increased resolution. And when it comes to cropping, you definitety have more headroom there in the G10. I'm still keeping my A640 for the moment as my P&S back-up, but the G10 is definitely a winner. I love the 28mm wide angle. I won't miss the swivel LCD screen, as I never really used it that much on my A640. I paid $442 for my G10 at Beach Camera, with free shipping and a free 4 GB SDHC card. I don't think that it is that expensive for all that it does, contrary to DP Review's "Cons" of the camera. There are a few more of DP Review's "Cons" that I think are ridiculous and could be "Cons" of most any other P&S camera. Personally, I didn't care for the G7 as compared to the A640, at least my copy of the G7 was not what I had expected it to be. But the G10 is much better than the G7 I had two years ago. This camera is a pleasure to use and the results are outstanding.

I "Highly Recommend" this wonderful brick of a camera. :o)

Hi Betarover,

The live histogram and the review histogram look clear to me, even in bright sunlight. The perimeter of the histogram box is outlined with white lines. The histogram pixels itself are shades of grey and white, from medium grey to white from the bottom to the top. The histogram has blinking highlights, but only on the thumbnail review image next to the review histogram. There are no highlight alerts on the full size 3" review image. The 40D and MkIII have that, and it would have been nice for the G10 to have that feature too.

I really appreciate the time you took for your answer and tend to agree with you 100% on your comments. I'd really like to get the g10, handled one today and it felt really good. I love the WA, IS and raw. It's going for $439 CAN at Aden Camera in Toronto, which like you say seems to be a reasonable price for that type of camera. Thanks again.

Hey, congrats, Bryan. I have one too. When used within it's limitations the camera can produce very nice results. I really like the build quality and handling for a compact digicam.
