Edge Sharpen action for photoshop (w. pics)

10DFinisher also only sharpens the edges of the pic with USM instead of the whole picture. It also applies another trick: when you enlarge the pic, then sharpen the edges, then downsize again you reduce possible USM artifacts.

10DFinisher also performs a very subtle local contrast enhancement. Would be nice to see how your action compares to 10DFinisher. I guess I will have to give it a go.
Yo.
I put together a small photoshop action (OmniEdgeSharpen) which
only sharpens the edges of the pic with USM instead of the whole
picture. This results in less noise.

I use it to batch-sharpen whole folders.
Anyway, here it is if you like it:

If you don't approve of my choice of USM (134, 0.7) you can always
change the action to your liking.

Paul, I just tried 10Dfinisher and Omnicolor's Edge sharpening actions on the same picture. 10D finisher didn't seem much to sharpen the image, but maybe I didn't use it correctly. Do you use it on the original non-resized image?

You can change the amounts for your taste; also, since we operate the 8MP image instead of 6 on 10D, they should be a bit greater.

It is a great action that requires you to start from an unsharpened image. It sharpens quite a lot, but if the image has been sharpened before (like using anything but the -2 sharpness setting in camera or in the RAW converter) it may result in sharpening artifacts (halos).

The thing that is so good about 10DFinisher is that it performs the sharpening in an enlarged picture. This trick reduces sharpening artifacts considerably.

You always need to use 10Dfinisher on an unsharpened image. It actually sharpens a lot, but if you start from an already sharpened image it will not sharpen much more but result in sharpening artifacts.

Thanks Paul,

I used the action on a RAW from my DRebel (300D), using EVU with no sharpening at all. I didn't resize at all, but I didn't see much sharpening at the end. And it's not that my picture was already sharp, it was taken with my 18-55 lens kit which isn't the sharpest lens (in my hands at least). What USM paramters should I use on such a big file?

Tonight I'll post comparisons of the original, and the results of both 10D finisher and OmniEdge actions.

When I was using the 300D, my usm settings were usually something like 90-150, .2-.5, 0. I noticed that when I moved up to the 20D, those settings changed to 100-200, .3-.7, 0.

I don't have photoshop (I use photo impact). Can you give a list of the commands (or the logical steps) in the action so that I and others can try to duplicate it for other programs. The action is not readable if you don't have photoshop :-(

I will publish the photo impact action (if it works well) in this forum of course.

Finally I got a pretty good result with 10Dfinisher with: 300% - 1 - 0

I will experiment more. It gives great results, but this action takes forever to sharpen a picture.

Looks great for sharpening without increasing noise.

Perhaps one suggestion for CS2 and later: to use smart sharpen rather than unsharp mask, because that automatically avoids trying to sharpen in dark areas where it would increase noise the most. I will try that.
