... Australia in December 2008 due to the ozi dollar not doing so well.

Not sure what's happening else where around the world, but here down under, we are not very happy!

Just thought I share this news to the ozi readers who are planning to buy just before xmas... you might be better of buying now...

Please correct me if I'm wrong about this. Thanks

same thing in Canada...
5D2 was announced to come at a certain price.

then Canon increased the price before it hit the stores, even those having pre-ordered were not being honored...

I notice Adorama has increased their prices and removed the Canon special promotion instant rebate on the 50D and specified lenses. Hopefully they will add them ....

Probably need to wait until after Christmas. I would expect prices to fall given the current economic times?

I just checked the Adorama site and the price on the 50D has been LOWERED by $30.

Hi

If the value of your money goes down 30-40% , it is not exactly Canon who is responsible... Global market prices are in US dollars - and everything else in Australia will soon go up 30%, not just Canon.

If they lower the prices down there, it is us who must compensate by paying more . We Europeans are already paying 20-30% higher prices because prices are kept low in USA - that is a huge important market ...

What is the source of your "news"?

Unsubstantiated, perhaps ... but not unheard of.

I know in many industries this is happening in Australia. And 30% seems to be the "benchmark" figure used by companies to keep their profits up.

Canon Australia seems to be treated as an independent cost-centre from the Canon perspective, and AFAIK, reports all of its profits in JPY. Given that the Aussie dollar has fallen sharply against both the USD and the JPY, it would make complete sense for them to hike the price ... but I would say after Xmas would be the go, as they will have already paid on forward orders.

Any stock ordered for next quarter will be at the new price ... no proof, but that is what I would suspect they will do.

Sure, the prices may go up. However the original poster gave specific date (December), specific number (by 30%) and at the same time said: "no proof" (and no source of this "news"). This total and pure speculation, not "news".

4-6 weeks ago when looking at 50d in Greensborough camera shop (Australia) I was told that Canon were going to put their prices up mid December.

Still not proof but it is some corroboration. Don't recall any specification of %.

You may think it is total rubbish, but it is a fact that all Canon lens prices will go up on 15 Dec. This is part of the email I received this from my pro dealer on 18 November:

They expect the price increase to be 20-30%.

How else would you suggest Canon reestablishes its margins when the AUD has dropped 35 cents against the USD and even more against the JPY?

It's true. A friend of mine is award winning pro photographer that is tight with both Nikon and Canon. He's given me exact dates for the increase but i'll have to find my notes. I know one of them is having the increase on December 14th, the other sometime soon.

--My local dealer, in Port Macquarie, that I bought my 50D from said that accessories & lenses would all be going up 20-30% on Dec 15th, but that he wasn't sure about camera bodies as these are the most competitive area of sales & that Canon may wait to see what Nikon does with body prices.

Amazon currently has the 50D for $1098US.

'I can look at a fine art photograph and sometimes I can hear music.' - Ansel Adams

Canon 40D, 70-200mm f4L IS, 28-135mm IS, Sigma 17-70mm f2.8 Macro, 100-400 mm f4.5L IS Sony R1, Canon Pro1

The guy i got the information from said all Nikon and Canon gear would go up by 30%, he knows the top australian reps very well for Nikon, Sony and Canon. No word on what sony will do yet. But i think you might be right, the new camera bodies will probably battle it out a bit so maybe they'll end up with around a 15% increase in the end.

Obviously you do not understand basics of market economy...

If the AU dollar looses 35% of its value - and so on - what must happen to prices ?

I surely hope my speculation is a total rubbish and price of cameras (and other electronics or whatever...) stays as it is or even drop when the AUD is going down against the USD...

Seriously we don't even need speculation to work this out...
