Here are two of my favorite photos from my new D100 after a week of ownership:

http://www.pbase.com/jayg/d100_favorites

All are unmodified, straight out of the camera, auto everything

My top 3 favorite things about owning a D100 so far:

1) 512k CF card lets me take 150+ FINE JPEGs before 'reloading'

2) Fast camera means I took 600+ photos in the first few days (mostly junk). I'm learning more quickly than with my N80.

3) Inkjets still disappoint me - my local camera shop produced AMAZING 4x6 and 8x10 prints for less than cost of ink+paper.

4) This is more camera than I currently have skills, but there's nothing like having such an awesome tool to learn with!

I am addicted to dpreview and I am happy that the talented pros and semi-pros are able to teach us newbies so many new things! Keep it up - is is VERY much appreciated.

And please keep shooting down the unhelpful, cynical people who don't seem to have much joy about the art and science of photography.

Thanks - Jay

Glad you are having fun with the D100. I am curious about your statement regarding inkjets. I don't know what you get your 8x10's processed for, but I can' make 8x10's ( well actually I can print up to 13x19) with my inkjet that will rival ANY photo finisher. You spent a large amount of money on a D100, don't you want to print larger than 8x10 and make good use of all of those pixels? My cost for an 8x10 including ink and matter paper is about $1.50. If you can find someone to print it for cheaper than that, let me know!
Have fun with your D100, a great camera!

I am using a Canon S9000. I usually print on Epson Matter. I also like office depot premium gloss, NCR Satin finish, and the Epson Premium. Would love to try some Red River Soon.

( Thats another reason for InkJet Printing, you can pick from so many types of paper, its great! )

I'm using an HP cp1160 with premium photo paper. I looked at Epsons, I've looked at dye sublimation printers. Nothing I've ever seen out of a consumer PC printer comes close to what I'm getting from my local photo finisher on their brand new Fuji system.

When I look at printer+ink+paper+time and the quality I've managed to get (despite many attempts to get higher quality) + borders v.s. copy a bunch of images to a CF card, drop it off on my way to work and pick up on the way home and have great prints with no fuss.

4x6 for $.99 and 8x10 for $2.49. So no - I'm not actually getting better $ print for 8x10. But I throw out a lot that don't work out and there is considerable wastage with 4x6 unless I swap out paper.

I need some spend some time in the Printers and Printing to see if I've just got a lame printer (it was reviewed well) or if it is user error.

But in the mean time, the Fuji processor my local shop seems to be doing a much much better job than I can manage to do at home.

Jay,

Nice shots! I especially love the "swing" shot.

Happy shooting!

The Epson 1270 and variants have been the de facto highest quality consumer inkjets for a while. The Canon S900/9000 now seem to be giving Epson a run for its money with the bonus of very high speed printing.

I have an Epson 890 and a borrowed 1270. Printed on Epson premium glossy, the image quality is superior to any consumer lab enlargements I've seem (although no doubt costly pro labs can do much better).

A friend of mine dabbles with photography and he has been using a mamiya C330 120 roll film camera for a couple of years and getting 14 inch square enlargements made at a cost of about £10 per print.

Just out of interest, I scanned one of his negs on my Epson 1640 flatbed and printed it A3 on the 1270. After a bit of editing, we were able to produce prints that clearly sharper and more detailed than the chemical print at an 8th of the cost.

Maybe this was more and indictment of his printing service but in my opinion his prints were no worse than those I've seen from other similar services so I'm willing to give the credit to the Epson inkjet...

I own a HP 932 printer that I bought on closeout for $49. Horrible color prints. Good text.

My brother-in-law owns a Epson 1270. Great color prints! However, the pro lab I use still does a better job.

I use his printer occasionally. Should I buy it myself? (1280). At $400+ for the printer plus paper plus ink, I can get about 267 professionally printed 8x10s at $2.99 until I would break even. Both would cost about $798.

Epson is the answer. Get an Epson 1280 or perhaps the new 2200--when it is released. I'm sure you'll see knockout photo quality. I still make eye popping RA4 prints in my traditional darkroom and the 8X10 paper costs about 0.7 cents a sheets. But my Epson (1270) gets more and more use as time goes by and my original distaste for digital printing is fast being overcome as a result of the superb performance of Epson ink jet printers. HP, Canon and others still have not got it right

Hi Jay,

I love that first pic, if that's not sharp enough for everybody, I don't know what would be. I downloaded it and tried goofing around with unsharp mask. It seems to hold up to quite a bit of sharpening. I did a couple passes at 150, 1 and 4 and it really puts the sparkle in that shot. That shot of yours really holds my attention, very engrossing. Excellent job.

I know it's getting to be an old subject now, but I'm still on the fence as to the D100 or the S2. Shots like this make me lean towards the D100. It proves that the camera is not the limiting factor.

Thanks for posting, keep it up.

Regards,

Mark
