Hi guys,

I just found out my sensor cleaner is broken, and would have to send it in. However, because I bought my camera in USA and now I'm based in Italy, the shipping is a bit complicated.

I wanted to know:

1. How long is the normal D700 warranty?

2. If I wish to repair this at a later time when I am in the US, must I be within the warranty? (even though I called in and told them about this problem already)

3. Is it a good idea to ignore this problem and just continue using the camera?

Thanks,
Steve.

The sonic sensor cleaner does almost no good. If I were you I wouldn't worry about having it repaired. It is more of a marketing gimick than anything else.

One year. You can buy an additional two years of coverage if you want.

I suggest you ask them, and get an answer in writing. One way of doing so would be to ask the question via their website.

the camera?
If it were my camera, I'd get it fixed.

Actually, I find it works quite well. Better than the D300. The 300, Ive had to swab on several occasions. I have not had to swab once on the 700, as of yet.

I suppose the real question at this point is whether it's just the sensor cleaner that's broken, and why.

Symptom: a. Can't hear the high pitched sound when cleaning sensor.

b. The option for automatically cleaning the sensor at startup/shutdown, etc, is now stuck on "clean at startup and shutdown." I can't even set it to off.

Take a stab anyone?

I agree with Rosco.

I have well over 175 lens changes at this point with nothing other then a single air-cleaning with a Hurricane Blower. The built-in sensor clean works considerably well, especially comparing to other cameras.

I wouldn't 'live' with a broken camera, so I can't offer much of a suggestion...

Are you permanently in Italy, or living there long term? I would think that Nikon might allow transferring the warranty service to Italy with proof of residency.

is it just because you don't hear the high pitched whine......I dont hear than in mine but it may be my hearing!!

Cleaning is set to shutdown......any other ways of finding out if it is working or not.

I have just done a 'clean now' on mine and it came up with the 'done'
sign so presumably it is working OK..... but did not hear any sound
during its operation.

Well, take a look at your options underneath for the automatic sensor cleaning. Are you able to put it on some of the other modes? Mine is stuck to "clean at startup/shutdown" and I'm unable to change it to any of the other modes.

Have you EVER heard the sensor clean sound? It should be fairly audible. Maybe ask someone with good hearing? Mine definitely was not like this before.

In the Setup Menu next to Clean image sensor I have the symbols - -
then on the next screen I have clean now or clean at startup/shutdown.

If I highlight the latter then go to the next screen I have ON clean at startup and OFF for the rest.

If I then go to clean at shutdown then press OK I still get clean at startup/shutdown OFF on the second screen in, but on the last screen it still shows ON clean at startup and not at shutdown as I programmed it.
I'm confused...LOL

Alright guys, once and for all. Someone please verify this.

If I choose this:

Then I choose this:

I should get this?

Yes. That's exactly what you should get, the "value" for the Clean at Startup/Shutdown "menu item" is now set to "On" which means "Clean at Startup/Shutdown is set to Clean when camera is turned On only." Yes, it's confusing. It's not the only Menu Item that has clumsy wording.

As for not hearing the sensor cleaning, you won't on the D700 or D90 while you will on the D300. Nikon has changed the method slightly and the frequency at which it operates.

Yes, that is the expected results. The text at that level doesn't change only the icon and the inner menu selected value does. Congratulations your camera is working exactly as it should.

FWIW my sensor cleaner makes basically no noise, unless I'm in a room with no ambient noise I can't hear it.

Slight sigh of relief...but...

I do not know how to explain the fact that just a month ago I WAS able to hear the sensor clean.

Possible explanation:

1. after thousands of uses the sensor cleaner is now "broken-in", to the point where it no longer makes a sound

2. after thousands of uses the sensor cleaner is now broken, thus it no longer makes a sound.

Is there a way to test whether my sensor cleaner is in fact in good order?
