I know which camera is better...

I just can't decide which I would rather have...

I currently have the canon 5D & 24-105L kit (Just got) and canon 30D (Selling) & Canon 50L

I am able to exchange the 5Dkit for the canon 5DMKII body.... (I have not opened the 5D yet....)

I would be left with the canon 5DMKII & 50mm f/1.2L...

I am not losing money or gaining money in this deal, I just can't decide if it is worth it to lose the 24-105L for the new 5D MKII.

What Would You Do? :)

Thanks

Keep the 5D as obviously money is tight see how much you use the camera over the holiday season then check after the new year to see if u can afford.

Only thing is the 5D will probs depreciate quicker as it will be used and the mark II out.

Lenses don't depreciate nearly as fast and they're often a limiting factor in determining whether or not you can get a given shot. All the body does is make the most of your lens, so if you're on a budget I'd skimp on the body before the lens. (You know you'll be replacing the body sooner or later, but if you treat them right your lenses could last you a lifetime!)

The 5D is a wonderful camera and the mark II doesn't change that fact in the least. All it does is drive 5D prices down to the point where there are great bargains to be found. Don't get me wrong, I'm eagerly awaiting my 5DmkII but I'm not skipping out on a key lens purchase to get it.

I'd sell the 24-105mm on Ebay and apply that to the cost of the 5D kit. I did...:-). Use the 5D with your 50mm 1.2 (very sweet lens btw). If you like the 5D (you will) then use your money to buy another lens you might like. I'm not a fan of the 24-105. I think the 5D2 will disappoint a bit with it's crippled video , 21MP and gimmick live view. Do you really need 21MP? As for depreciation...the 5D you have will fall slower than the 5D2 in coming months.

I'm from the 10-50D forums. I own 50D and thought I would pick up a 5D for landscapes when the prices came down more. Based on what I have seen with the 50D resolution gains (upgraded from 40D) I will not be looking for a 5D. No disrespect to the 5D, a great camera and I have always wanted one. Aside from some of the minor noise issues with the 50D, technology has just taken too much of a leap since the 5D was released. Only an opinion. I have no science, physics or documented facts to back this up. I only know what I see.

The 5D2 eats the 5D, but in a good way. The 5D was always great.
A 5D2 is the same as having a 1Ds3, just packaged differently.

There's also a nice video option, that, despite detractors, works well. Professional? No, but for some nice wildlife, kids etc, kick ass! The lenses make the difference.

As for losing the 24-105 . . hard one.

No doubt 5D MKII. You can always get another lens later.

I have used the 5D before and I feel it is leaps and gains ahead of my 30D. I will never go back to a crop camera.

I love the 5D...

I just am torn!

I 100% understand it's mostly about lenses and secondly the body.

Even though the 24-105L might not be the sharpest tool in the L shed, I love it!

I was leaning allot towards the new 5D MKII earlier, but now I think I am just putting everything in perspective :(, and the 5D kit may be the smarter choice.

I have to make up my mind by tomorrow since amazon gave me a shipping label if I decided I wanted to return it.

I guess my question to myself was, "will the 5D MKII make me a better photographer than having the 5D?"

Unfortunately I feel allot of people know the answer to that one....

Maybe I will be that one photographer that does not give in and put more effort into photography than gear. :)

I appreciate any time you guys and gals have spent answering my question, Thanks.

The 5D is leaps and bounds over the 30D. No question. I owned he 30D (which I thought was an amazing camera) and currently own the 24-105 which is a great lens. Unfortunately the new crop sensor cameras are starting to challenge older full frame cameras. Happens in nature every day.

a 5DII and 24-105 would be more useful to me than a 5D and a 50L. Maybe you could replace the 50L with a Canon or Sigma 50 1.4. In other words, return the 5D kit, sell the 50L and buy the 5DII kit and a 50 1.4. Just a thought.

No, it's true - he IS the U.S. President!

I have no hesitation on this one, throw the kit and get the Mark II.

You'll get what many pro were happy with until now, so I guess it should float your boat for many years.
Problem today are lenses, if that wasn't the case, Zeiss won't be that saleable.

Investing in lenses today is in fact spending because they will have to improve and lot !

Just curious...which is the better camera out of the 2?

Well, from what I have read and seen (few examples), the 5D MKII is the better camera.

Leaps and bounds ahead? I don't know since not many have gotten out... But for IQ it seems MKII is better. How much better? I really don't know, nor do others I feel.

I am still confused!!! :) The 5D is a beautiful camera, produces beautiful images and I am attached :) (I know lame!)

3/4 of you seem to say keep the kit I have now. The other 1/4 seems to say ditch the 5D kit.

I am not rich, I am a student and I am extremely lucky to even have had enough money to get the 5D/kit.

See I am not one to want the gimmicks. I would rather have a stripped down camera with great IQ than a camera with all these little gimmicks and worse IQ.

Like Live View. I will never use that in my life, I despise it... Do I care too much it's there? NO, cause I know other people like it. But that's not why I am buying a camera.

If you guys can honestly say you feel the 5D is close to the IQ of the 5D MKII then I will not upgrade. ( I don't think it will be toe to toe, but you guys know what I mean) Hopefully! :)

O another thing, I read was adobe would not update CS3 for MKII raw files. I can't afford CS4 ha!

Thanks again!!!!

There are plenty of 5D2 pics on the net now so you can see for yourself. Personally, I can't tell by looking at a pic which camera was used, Nikon, Canon, Fuji etc. I'm happy with a $1500.00 New 5D. Why spend more?

You're a student !!!.... Sell the stuff and get something like a used 40D....

Ha, very true!! It's very hard! Occasionally I can tell when a hasselblad is used, but still, if your pro at PS you can make something look amazing...

I am thinking of just sticking with my 5D/kit... I can always sell the 24-105L for a profit since I bought it in a kit....

My problem has been, is what lens would I get instead of the 24-105L?

I have already had the 24-70L and sold it(don't want that one again)....

My only other options were an extreme wide angle or a 70-200L.....

Thanks,
Raynes

My only other options were an extreme wide angle or a 70-200L.....
5D + 17-40L + 70-200 f4 IS + 50 1.8 = You're done.

1 Full Frame camera
1 Wide angle zoom
1 Portrait/tele zoom with IS
1 Lowlight prime

You really got everything you need with this kit.

I have a 40D & a 30D. I have been torn with the good deals on the old 5D. I already have a 24-105. I think I would be satisfied with 12 mgs instead of 21 & I don't know if I would use the video. What makes me lean toward the 5DII are dust issues, live view, which is really useful for precision mf, the lens adjustments, & better iso range. I have the 5D II on order at ritz & I think that I will go ahead with it. Good luck with whatever your decision.
