I recently took my Canon D30 to my local Canon service center for sensor cleaning. With all the horror stories I have been reading, I felt more comfortable letting Canon do it. The camera had to be sent to Irvine since the local technician didn’t want to touch it. Well, I got the camera back today. Cleaning was free, but I was told the next time cleaning will be considered regular service, or $180! I was told the manual has instructions on how to clean the sensor, so Canon wants the customer to clean it themselves! Incredible!! Anybody else run into this problem?

Canon's cleaning isn't even worth the shipping charges to them. They supposedly cleaned mine when I sent it in for front-focusing. It came back worse than when I'd sent it in. I had to re-clean it myself (per the instructions).

$180 ? Woah, how much time do they spend on it?

David, how did you clean your sensor? I've been reading about people using Q-tips and cleaning fluid, but I am really hesitant about touching the sensor with anything.

I'm just blowing it out with a bulb blower --- the kind you use to get wax out of ears. It may take several tries to get it clean.

I've never managed to get it perfectly clean down to say f/16 or smaller aperture. But I never shoot that small an aperture anyway. Plus, it's only a few spots.

I'm way to chicken to touch the sensor with anything.
