I currently have a Cokin P series filter setup and have several filters to use if required. I was wondering what people use for a ND grad?

Im looking to purchase a good quality one to use with my D300 and Tamron 17-50mm lens.

Any suggestions ideas much appreciated.

I prefer Lee to Cokin, though at the price that should be so!
I primarily use Lee's 'starter' set of 1, 2 and 3 stop soft ND grads.

I used Cokin in my film days when I had bucket loads of filters for various things, but I rarely need more than my grads and a polar since switching to digital. IR can be fun too.

Thanks for all the info and advice. Think I'll work on getting a singh-ray at some point though I've just purchased a grey/grad (not sure if this is the same as a ND) P121 to play with.

Thanks again all for the advice :)

ps does the cokin filter hold the lee filters?

Singh-Ray, Galen Rowells are well respected.
After looking around, I decided to go for the "typical" Galen Rowell 2-GND set:
  • 2 Stop soft edge
  • 3 Stop hard edge
I'm very happy with that combination. I have been surprised that the 3-stop hard edge is by far the most useful for typical sun/sky situations. But combining the two together is quite useful and very often, more than 3 stops is needed. The 2-stop soft edge is also useful to grade a foreground (e.g., over water).

Typical results with 3-stop hard edge:

Number 1 is nicely done, Doug.
