Can you have both an AE-L and an AF-On button on the S2?

I'm picking up on a thread on Nikon SLR under ergonomics. The D100's AE/AF button can be set to AF-On but then there is no AE-L button. As Thom says in the thread, the only work around is using the shutter release button for AF. This has real drawbacks. So I'm hoping that one of those 4 function buttons on the S2 can be set to either AE-L or AF-On, and that the shutter release can be taken off of AF. Can anyone report on this? Thanks...Peter

Yes, you will be pleased to know that the AE-L/AF-L button has choises:
  • AE-L and AF-L together
  • AE-L only
  • AF-L only
  • AF activation - no lock
  • AE-L toggle: push-on, push-off
Shutter button can be set for:

-A E-L on
-A E-L off

. . . cheers.

Barnesphoto- Thanks for reponding. This certainly works. I guess it means that those 4 (f1-f4) buttons on the back are not assignable to these functions. We can live with that....Peter

It's already been answered, but I should comment on the original question on the Nikon SLR forum. The poster wanted to control when the camera focused (when you turn the CSM on to AF-ON for that button, pressing the button starts autofocus and letting it go essentially locks it [if you're in Continuous Servo you can still release the shutter]). But the problem is that he now had no way to lock exposure. Well, he does, by setting the shutter release to lock exposure via a CSM. While this might not be the most convenient way of doing it (some Nikon bodies have AF-ON and AF-L/AE-L buttons), it's a somewhat kludgy workaround.
