What is HDR??

99% of HDR photos people
post are hideous to me.
agreed. and yet
I think it's a good example as it captures a high dynamic range
without looking like a comic book image.
disagree. it's hard for me to define what makes that photo hdr because the exposure is so split. and that's the whole point of hdr, after all--to capture detail throughout the dynamic range...so (badly) blown highlights are not, in fact, a good example of what hdr actually entails or is useful for.

Its "High dynamic range" not "All dynamic range"

In fact HdR works best when there is a very large difference from high to low, Its this "split" that a normal camera cannot capture. shooting grey cards on a cloudy day would be a waste of time in HDR. Representing what is beyond the DR capabilities of the sensor and more closely what the human eye would see at the scene is my approuch to HDR, it was very bright outside and I purposefully allowed some of the leaves in the extreme background to come close to blow out but not completely. It may not be to your liking, but its not "badly" done.
