Where/How do I go about protecting my new G2 lens?

Just got my G2 last week and want to know the best way to protect the lens when the cap is off. I had a screw-on filter on my last 35mm camera. But where/how do I go about doing this for my G2?

Thanks in advance,

-- Dave

A lot of folks have purchased the "lensmate" for their G2. I opted for the Canon lens adapter LA-DC58 which protects the lens and also allows screw on filters. One nice thing about the adapter is that you don't have the annoying "lens on" beeps when you forget to take the lens cap off. It is always off with the adapter in place.

Enjoy the G2. I've had mine since February and I've taken thousands of pictures with it. It has paid for itself for sure.

I do not know if this is the same product as lensmate (bought it locally) - but I prefer this one over Canon original adapter - primary due to smaller tread size - 52 mm compared to 58mm on Canon. Can use smaller ( = cheaper) filters and also add to camera support since it is at the same level as the bottom of the camera. The only problem associated with the use of lens adapter is when you want to use the optical viewfinder or built in flash - since they partially obscure the view and flash burst (you can always remove it before taking these type of shots!).

I've just purchased a x0.8 wideangle lense and the LA-DC58,

Can you put a lense cap on the LA-DC58?

What is the best way to remove fingerprints off the lense? The Canon
manual says not to use any cleaning fluids or the like.

I use a lens pen on my 990. I bought one at a sporting goods store instead of a photography store though. They sell the same thing, only cheaper. I guess they're worth less for cleaning rifle optics!?! (rolls eyes) :-)

By the way, I can't wait to get my hands on a G2. I'm in the process of trying to sell the 990 and the G2 will be the replacement. The D30 sold me on Canon digital. :-)

Hi Dave,

I have both the Canon LA-DC58 adapter and lensmate adapter and both have UV filter. Both is great in protecting the lens. I prefer the lensmate on because:

1) To my own taste, the lensmate looks and feel better. The canon one is plastic and the lensmate is a metal one.
2) It produces less built-in flash shadow at full-wide zoom
3) It blocks the AF lamp less
4) It blocks the optical viewfinder less.

Anyway, I will still keep the canon adapter in case I buy new 58 mm lens.

Thanks for all the input!

I ended up purchasing a black 49mm lensmate adapter because it is smaller in diameter than the Canon, and it's metal, not plastic. I also got a Hoya HMC UV FIlter, a 49mm lens cap w/tether, and a lenspen (which has a lens brush and a dry cleaner. Details at http://www.lenspen.com ) from here:

For $68 (including s/h), it's a good deal.

IMO "lens protection" is 80% marketing scam, 20% necessity. I put UV filters over lenses when I'm taking pics in the desert or at the beach on windy days. Otherwise not. Modern lens coatings are not fragile.

But I do recommend the LensMate filter adapter. It's nicely made, matches my G2 color-wise and takes smaller (and cheaper) filters than Canon's adapter.

Thanks Dave.

I just order the lensmate about an hour ago! :-)

Hi Tiger,

Do tell me your opinion about the lens cap and the tether when you received it. I bought it all from Lensmate too and I liked their service. Excellent. However, I do find the quality of the lens cap like cheap plastics. I didn't use the tethers at all as I don't like things dangling around while I take pictures. Anyway, I now begin to appreciate the lens cap more because as I tried to buy another 49 mm cap, the exterior diameter was much bigger than the lensmate external diameter. So I still use back the lensmate lens cap.

My next target will be to get the 420EX flash.

In my opinion due to the construction of the lens element - it is a 80% necessity - unless you are skilled enough to put the camera back in order just by yourself - someone already succeed! : )

Follow-up: Well, I got my Lensmate yesterday, and what a GREAT product it is! Well worth the $22 to protect the G2 lens. I also a lens cap w/tether, a Hoya HMC UV filter and a Lenspen to keep it all clean. Very stoked!
