I'm coming close to launching a website to sell prints - the last major piece I need is credit card processing.

I need something that I can just plug in to my existing pages without re-directing users to another site (not paypal!) and I'd really like a service that has options to accept cards via phone or other, additional methods besides just on the site. Needing to write code isn't a problem.

I'd love some suggestions!

First you need a site to upload images. (Photo Gallery) Most use paypay. You could have customers deal directly with you, therefore you have controll over correcting/editing photos.

If your a PPA member, you get a really good deal through Midwest Transaction Group. 888-599-2209

The website is my own, custom built, which is why I need to be able to integrate the payment system on the site itself, with my branding.

Good point about the PPA membership, I'm not sure whether I'd qualify at this point but I'll look into it.

Some other ideas I've gotten at this point and will look into are Google Checkout and Paypal Virtual Terminal.

DIY with credit cards puts a huge amount of liability on your shoulders. You must meet credit card processor requirements which are tough. If you get hacked, fines from visa, mc, amex are huge.

you will need :

1. A merchant account. Unless you meet volume requirements, there will be a monthly fee.

2. A card processor account, which actually processes the card and sends data to your merchant account. some companies will do both.

Why would anyone want to tackle this himself?

This is why Paypal and Google checkout are excellent for a do it yourself, you do not receive or handle the actual credit card number or information, so you cannot loose someones credit card data thru hacking.

If you really want to integrate, authorize.net has interfaces that can be coded to interface with your website, but they will want you to meet CISP requirements.

These are some very good points, which is why I would suggest E-xact Transactions ( http://www.e-xact.com/ ) They have quite a few methods of integration since you are writing the code yourself (including support for Ruby on Rails). They are PCI compliant, taking much of the liability and jumping through hoops for certification mentioned previously.

You will require a merchant account still, however this generally isn't too hard to set up.

What about Instaproofs.com? Have you checked there?
They handle the credit card transactions for you.
You don't have to bother at all with the paperwork
and hassle of setting up your own credit card account.
No set up fee. No monthly fee.

We sell hundreds of pictures through exposuremanager.com and they have a very customizable front end with non of their branding, they handle fulfillment and payment processlng (usually credit card) and charge us a small fee. You can also use them for order and payment processing and fullfill yourself. Also, for fulfillment, you can tweak the photo specific to an order, what they do is email you asking you upload the photo for the print. Their lab work is not the best, but usually good enough, never had a complaint and I think we are pickier about labs than most of our customers.

If you want to see one I've set, go to http://www.LagunaNiguelParade.com and click on PHOTOS. As you'll see, there's zero branding on the site that would let you believe it's being managed by anyone else. We've used them for a few years, never a billing problem, not one customer complaint about quality.

If you chose to use them, signup via this link so the parade gets a $10 donation. I make no money from this or from the site, just a volunteer.

bfox2,

I can send you a short power point I and my partner put together for a grad class. (MS Information Systems) It's a quick little what must be done for online credit processing, including a merchant account which you will need if you go independent which I think you indicate. A few vendors are listed so use it as best you can.

Let me know if you want me to send and will try to get it you through private communcation...

The only fees that I know of our the percentage of the transaction
fees. No set-up fees that I know of.
My business partner just looked into using Paypal for credit cards
and told me there is a $30 per month fee! Anyone using
Paypal who can confirm (or not) this?

Paypal - if you only do online transactions - thru your website or e-mail there is no monthly fee just the transaction 2.9% plus .30. If you want Virtual Terminal to be able to do phone, fax mail then it is transactions fee plus $30.00 a month

This is taken right off of their site.

Low transaction fees 1.9% to 2.9% + $0.30 USD
No monthly, set-up, or cancellation fees
Get paid by anyone . even by customers without a PayPal account
