If you only want to use one flash unit perhaps it isn't. Since there's no hotshoe mounted flash capable of supplying enough power to balance sunlight at normal working distances anyway, then your choice only consists of inadequate flash units. Whatever you chose they're all limited and inadequate.. The point of the Trio is that it will control off camera flash reliably by radio and your remote flash will make up the difference or be used for other purposes.anyway, less power than 580ex II is not a good news.
In a white room an SB-800 gives f10 at 10ft, in open space it gives f8.6.
The Trio should give f8 @10ft. What's this? 1/3 stop less?
Realistically, the only way to find out for sure is to get one and try it.
Quantum make some of the most powerful off camera battery powered flash units which integrate into your cameras TTL system. The Trio is an easy way to access these more powerful units utilising radio and your cameras capabilities..
If you want more power - thats already available. You just need to buy a 'T' or 'X' Flash, a D adapter for your camera and if you want radio TTL with Quantum, a radio transmitter. This is what I use currently.
I'm sure 'more power' will be developed by producing an 'X5D-r Trio' - until then, I look forward to my Trio delivery if only to get rid of the connecting cables between the camera, D adapter and radio transmitter.

Theres only one sun. Why do I need more than one light to get a natural result?
