Hi,

yesterday I bought a Soligor extension tube set of 12, 20, 36mm. It's nearly the same as the Kenko set ... metal mounts.

I was astonished about the results in combination with the EF 75-300 IS ...

... this one was taken with the complete extension of 68mm and the lens at 75mm, so the magnification is nearly 1:1. I took it handheld at 1/60 sec, f16, ISO200 and the Speedlite 420EX on a D30. Oh, and yes ... IS was switched on and the working distance was something about 100mm.

What do you think?

I also tested with the EF 28-135 IS ... magnifications up to 1.5:1 are possible with the complete tube set. But the optics are not that good ... CA can become a little problem depending on the scene.

BTW ... is there a need to say, that this are toothpicks?

Hi Bill!
I understand that you did use IS, but can I assume that your
autofocus did not work with this set-up?
Mmh ... I didn't even try ;-)

I wanted to use the infinity focus setting to achieve the best possible optics with the tubes.

BTW - it's said, that the auto focus doesn't work with f-stops of 5.6 and smaller apurtures, when using extension tubes, so I didn't even want to try with three tubes at f11.
But I tested the 36mm on the 28-135 IS and the auto focus worked.

Hi Chris,

Looks like you got very steady hands - 1/60 is very impressive for this setup used handheld. Nice shot/DOF.

Hi Mikhail!

No ... my hands aren't that steady ... I used IS (image stabilizer).

I think without the IS, there would have been camera shake ... the set up was not light with the long lens and the flash.

That's one of the reasons, why I like this lens for macro work ... the IS is great.

Hi Laurie!
BTW ... is there a need to say, that this are toothpicks?
Definitely! I was going to ask if they were chopsticks? [g] Much
more impressive as toothpicks.
Hehe ... I don't think you would need extension tubes for chopsticks.

Btw ... a colleague at work said: "Hey, you must have very big tooth space, where these trunks fit." :-)

You are absolutely right and a very good point.
Your shot was very creative by the way. Thanks for sharing

Best regards,
Yes, I know John's fly micro shot and it's very nice. But it's the
shot of a dead (!) fly. Living flies never have dust on their eyes.

Here's a shot of a living (!) dragon fly, shot by the german macro
enthusiast Carlos Methfessel:

Not to say, that John's shot isn't great, but I would rate this one
even higher.

Thank you!

Hi Chris,

Sorry, missed it - thought it was regular 75-300. This doesn't mean that your shot looks any worse than before. Thank you for the link to the shot by Carlos Methfessel. Unfortunately I don't read German (one of my numerous problems). Could you please be so kind as to provide technical details on his shot.
Thank you.

Hi Chris,

You are absolutely right - that's a very nice piece of gear. I just looked at the price - adorama has them for $250. The only problem is 58mm thread. I would like to use it with my 28-70/2.8L (which is BTW a killer for closeups when used with extension tubes), and not sure if 77mm thread could be easily found.
Regards
