You can only keep one lens in your bag. What's it going to be??????

A fearful thought no doubt, but if you had to make this choice, which would you keep?

My lenses: Pentax 50 1.4, Tamron 28-75, Tamron 18-250, Tamron 70-300, Pentax 18-55, Pentax 55-300.

I wouldn't part with the Tamron 18-250. The colors are beautiful and it's just too darn convenient to carry around.

Hmmm. I guess I don't care which lens is in the bag. I suppose I'd say the DA 40mm because it's not going to take up much space. :)

Only 1 would be the 50-135mm, but here is a set I found I really like:

Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6

Distortion from many 16, 17 or 18 to XX lenses is too high at the wide end for my tastes. Prime like sharpness due to the short focal length range. The sigma has low distortion and CA relatively, and the 10mm is amazingly wide and my copy is sharp and has virtually no vignetting at any aperture/focal length.

Useful focal length range, but I could see the benefit of being able to go to 24mm. With the Pentax I would miss 10mm (20% wider than 12mm), with the Sigma miss 24 (20% longer than 20mm), the Tamron 10-24mm might be a great compromise if it performs well.

Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8

Prime like sharpness due to its short focal range. I wish it went to 20mm, but great for every day shots, and close focus for flowers and the like. Nice fast aperture for some subject isolation, but isn't all that necessary in this focal length.

Pentax 50-135mm f/2.8

Prime like sharpness due to its short focal range. Very useful focal length range for digital. Could be a little faster focusing and more flare resistant. My favorite lens.

For a single prime I would take an FA 31mm ltd.

which lens would YOU keep.

This is the order I would keep:
Tamron 28-75mm, decent range, fast lens, nice portraiture. Not wide enough.
Tamron 18-250mm, best range, but slow focus, small aperture.

Pentax 18-55mm, limited range compared to 18-250mm, but great over the same 18-55mm range.
Pentax 55-300mm, telephoto only
Pentax 50mm, useful only for certain occasions.

Tamron 70-300mm, too long of a telephoto only. There is a big difference between 55 and 70mm for field of view.

However, if you see my favorites, I favor the shorter range from about 10-135mm and have a couple old primes to fill in anything above 135mm.

When I just go to lunch in town every day, or roam around without a set purpose, it is almost always with my Tammy 18-250. It goes from near to far, and the IQ is sufficient for most usage, and superb for some. Very handy lens, it is a pleasure to use too.

I often go out with only one lens. The DA21 is pretty versatile, but I also have fun mounting the DA70 or FA135 and forcing myself to think in those terms instead.

The DA21 is my easiest choice, followed by the FA43.

The many lenses I have include these as potential carry around ones:
Pentax FA 28-70/4 - Lightest and smallest.
Tokina ATX Pro 28-70/2.8 - Heaviest but sharpest
Tokina ATX 24-200/3.5-5.6 - Good travel lens but heavy FF lens.
Tamron 18-200/ 3.5-5.6 - 2nd lightest and range makes it a good all-around lens.

Generally the Pentax 28-70/4 stays in the bag with the *ist D
and the Tamron 18-200 stays in the bag with the K10D.

From my kit, FA 43mm.
So I guess if I had your your kit I'd keep the FA 50mm.

It'd be the DA70 :)

Tho I'd be tempted to rush out before the deadline and get an FA43 . . .

Wake me up before you go go!

From my current lenses, I'd pick the 16-45/4 as it covers most situations with good results. If I had a 16-50/2.8, I'd probably pick that due to the faster aperture but the 16-45/4 is probably more portable. The 35/2.8 Macro sounds like a good one-lens solution too, I think that is going to be my next LBA acquisition :-)

If the light is expected to be good, or flash is OK, then the Tamron 18-250 would be the best choice.

If the light is not expected to be great, and flash is not feasible, then the Tamron 27-75 would be my choice.
