When I told the problem of "Gray Cast" on AutoWB D300 a months ago, lot of people put me down even don't know exactly "Gray Cast Problem"

".....just a grumbler, a dog like new born, whining ..." It was so embarrased for me...

But I handed in the report, and had a closed meeting with the concered

and Nikon post the new firmware today.

Nikon did not mentioned on the paper, but There are a lot of changes. especially AutoWB provement, and AF speed up, balanced Skin tones (pink color and more)

Am I whining?

A certain percentage of people in here tend to get their jollies knocking those who come in with issues. Don't let it worry you - you probably wouldn't want to trade lives with them for a single day. ;-)

Hopefully the new firmware fixed your issue(s). Now you can get the most out of your D300.

if you had simply said auto WB is not perfect on the D300 i would agree with you

glad to hear that Nikon has improved that

but what you said was that Nikon was desaturating images with AWB and i disagreed with that and explained and showed why i believed that was false

at least you took some time to make an input to Nikon and I laud you for that

good shooting,

David

Can you repeat the white balance tests again the same way you did the old ones?

I don't think it's whining. I had many faces overexposed in bright conditions and my dad with his 20d pointed it out to me as well while shooting same subjects his photos were very balanced on the faces. With flash especially I was getting overexposed faces or images that were to dark all together after tuning down the flash. Only fix was to use a white sheet picture as white balance setting in likely lit environment.

When I first got a d200 and an 18-200vr I was told I was whining about it also. It took a little while to realize my expectations were considerably different than a lot of folks, and now I am able to tell when to ignore them.

Anyhow, I didn't really think I had an auto white balance problem. There was just one extreme situation where it didn't do all that well, and I thought "its an extreme, what did I expect".

So anyhow, I just put the firmware on and tried auto WB in that situation and wow, I'm blown away by the improvement.

With my luck it probably messed everything else up, but I am impressed in this particular extreme.

I don't know exactly what was written several months ago concerning this point because at this time I hadn't the D300.. but you're right, with firmware upgrade, even if Nikon doesn't mention it, Auto WB worked much more better; I've notice that in difficult light conditions. This improvement is at least as well important as other modified firmware points IMHO ?
