Shot some photographs over my lunch hour again today. Just wanted to share the ones I liked the best.

All shot with the D90.

Comments and/or constructive criticism are welcomed and appreciated.
  1. 1 - Ominous: My favorite photo of the day. This was along the shoreline near the bay of Green Bay (Wisconsin). Dark clouds were starting to move in, but some great light was coming in from the side.

  1. 2 - Leaf Blanket: This tree had some interesting openings on it that allowed me to get a nice frame full of leaves. It's almost like a pile of leaves, but not really in a pile.

  1. 3 - Thinning Out: In general I just really liked the look of this tree. I've recently been taking note of how beautiful trees that lost most of their leaves can be. Usually I just focus on the ones that are full.

  1. 4 - Attempted Suppression: I liked this photo because of how the leafless trees appeared to be trying to block the colorful tree directly behind. I probably could've gone horizontal on this shot... but, oh well.

  1. 5 - Autumn Branch: Not much to say about this one. I like it, and it is what it is.

  1. 6 - Convergence of Shadows: I not only like how colorful this tree is, but I also like how the shadows on the ground sort of pull inward right behind the tree.

  1. 7 - Canopy Tree Scene: This tree has such a nice shape to it, but previous attempts to photograph it failed due to poor lighting. The lighting today was much better.

  1. 8 - Looking Up: I got right into the middle of this vegetation, knelt down, then shot upwards. This shot didn't turn out exactly as I had hoped, but it is close.

wow!

Thanks for looking and replying.

These photos were shot with the 18-105 lens (that comes with the D90 kit), and a Tokina 12-24mm wide angle. I also bought the 55-200 Nikkor, but I'm really convinced that mine is either deffective, or it's a piece of junk.

Anyway... hope you enjoy your D90. It really is a nice camera [my opinion]. I'm actually very close to shooting my 10,000th photo with it... yeah, it's been that much fun so far.

whew!

congrats again!
and post your 10,000th photo here. hihihihi
cheers. shoot some more.

Very nice photos. Thanks for your sharing.

Anyway, have you used the default setting of picture control or change them for your photos. I took a two-day trip to Macau, adjacent to HK, with my D90 and 18-200mm lens last week. I change the setting of sharpness to +5 and saturation +1 for my 18-200. But saturation remains 0 for 16-85mm. Active D-lighting is Auto. I am fine with this setting. But I am still learning how to post my rubbish pictures on this forum (I am a layman to computer).

@ CK Lee -
  1. Embedding images (only available to registered users) - To embed an image or photograph simply paste (or type) the URL (web address) of the image into your message (eg. "

" - don't include the quotation marks...), images more than 480 pixels wide will be scrollable. To link to an image WITHOUT EMBEDDING IT simply add a semicolon (;) to the end of the url (eg.

    ;)

I hope this helps you...

Thank you so much for your help. I will try this week end.

Wow, you really have the bug! I just rolled over 10K shutter actuations last week, and I thought I was burning my D80 when I got it less than 1 year ago! Actually I've slowed down a lot lately. I shot 2.5K my first month. Maybe I don't need that D90 after all... :(

BTW. Nice pics. First and last are my favorites because you worked interesting perspectives. The autumn leave shots feature spectacular color, but everyone's shot those before, so you know... Anyway, keep having fun.

I like No. 6 because of the light, the colours and most of all because you have an interesting subject sufficiently isolated (almost).

No. 8 is my favourite with very artistic structures and fantastic colours.
Like you said the composition is almost there.

A trick that I often use is to try a version, where one or more elements are crossing the vertices as these are some of the strongest points in the picture, like diagonals are very strong lines.

If you use them on some elements, these elements look as if they belong there and are "out of the way".

You haven´t used backlight very often. That´s one of my favourite lights and can be very nice for plants like No. 1.

Well, when I shoot I have my camera setup with a custom profile that I made with Neutral as my base. I call it "Neutral Boost" because it was Neutral with a bit more saturation. However, as I shoot with it, I adjust it based on the tweaks I have to make in post (so I don't have to make so many tweaks in post). Here are my custom picture profile settings:

Sharpening: 7
Contrast: +1
Brightness: 0
Saturation: +2
Hue: -1

According to the "grid" on the D90 (the one that shows how all the profiles relate to each other in terms of contrast and saturation), I'm actually more close to "Standard" now with all my tweaks.

However, I process 90% of my images as RAW, so I don't believe the picture profiles have much bearing on the photos I share publicly.

I stopped using Active-D, as I wasn't real happy with the result.

Thanks for taking the time to look and reply,
Andrew

My wife has the D80, and I used it for a couple weeks before I got the D90. I think the D80 is a great camera, and is a great choice if you don't want to spend the cash to get the 90. Some of the additional features on the D90 just make it a little easier to use (for me).

Well... I'm pretty new to DSLRs. I've been a P&S-er for quite a while, and mostly just pics of my young son. So, while there's no doubt many people have shot and posted fall leaves... it's still pretty new to me : ) Plus, I think just about everything has been photographed... so I can't let that disuade me from posting, or I'd never be able to post anything. : )

Thanks for taking the time to look and reply,
Andrew

"Perfect" may be pushing it, but I appreciate you saying so. I'm doing good on the shooting-end by not blowing out highlights (too often), but I'm still working real hard in post to get that elusive "perfect" exposure. Maybe one day I'll get the hang of it.

Thanks for looking Tony,
Andrew

Thanks.

I would have to say that most of the time I have to use exposure compensation. Of the ones I posted here, there are only 2 that didn't have exposure compensation, the other 6 did.

In matrix metering mode, I feel the D90 tends to over-expose quite often (for me). I was using center-weighted for a while and had less over-exposure, but I feel that I was a little more in control of things with that setting.

Andrew
Very nice, are you doing any kind of exposure compensation?

Thanks Uli. I appreciate your comments.

Sometimes I get a little vertice-happy, where everything HAS TO be on the vertice. Looking at other people's photos though, and studying how they compose, I've been trying to be not-so-set in my ways (that is, try other things). I'm glad you brought this up though, because sometimes I get away from something for so long that I forget about it completely.

Thanks again,
Andrew
