Amazon now has it for $2720. do you think it will continue to drop? Whats you prediction of lowest? What I am afraid is that price may actually go up like what happened to D200. I guess it all depends on how well Canon 5D and Sony A900 sells there stuff.

It will definitely keep on dropping until D700 becomes collectible item.

I am approaching this problem in 2 ways:
  • I am planning to buy another D700 body in a couple of months. This way dropping price becomes good news to me.
  • Im trying to take pictures that are worth more (at least to myself) than the price drop in every specific period of time
Hope this helps,

And you won't. Why would Nikon offer rebates for a hot selling body (from my local dealer). Makes no sense as Nikon has been riding a wave as of late.

I don't think they are flying of the shelves. 3G is 3g. The d3 flew.

Atleast in my area I can walk in and grab one anytime. But now the same with d3 at 5 day wait.

D700 will most likely not become a collectible item.

Its digital, it will sell more than just a few thousand items and it will technically become obsolete in just a few years.

It will fall in price even further (it is shocking to me, that the price here felt from 2400 EUR to 1650 EUR in roughly 4 months - that I call unstable, while the D3 lost less value in more than 10 months)

The D300 by the way lost within the last 6 months only 400 EUR value - somehow it is much more stable than the pricey D700.

I guess, Ill pick one under 1400 EUR, should there be nothing around more promising for me (I would love a D3 DX with the D300 sensor and 12FPS shooting JPGs at 12MP with the same battery as the D3 nowadays and the future Nikon bodies, that would be my dream body now)

The price of the D700 will start dropping like the Dow as soon as Canon’s 5D II hit the store shelves.

Come on Canon what’s taking so long?

In short yes.

The whole OECD including Japan is going into a likely severe and long recession.

We face the likelihood or already are in a deflation.

Things can only get cheaper from hereon.

With what was a dollar now buying about 66 cents of goods thanks to the incredible deficit spending, wars in the Middle East, and now the banking fraud and corruption, the real cost of anything produced overseas is much higher. The fall of the Euro thanks to the US mortage banking fraud is going to help with purchases of gear from countries in the EU, and may help with Japan as its economy is also being hit hard.

What we are more likely to see than price reductions are rebates from the manufacturers, like the many now available on Canon equipment. Canon makes a small portion of its overall corporate profits from photographic equipment and so is in a much better position to discount its cameras, much as it does now with the pricing for the 40D and 50D cameras.

Well of course it will, over the next 7 years until it hits around 500 dollars, used as has the D1X. Most importantly, it will go down in a linear fashion, gradually. So when you see it a price you can live with, go for it, as it won't go down massively as did the D2H 800 dollars in one day when the D2Hs came out. Nikon learned a lesson there.

If it makes you feel better, you can get it after a price drop, knowing there won't be one for a few months after that.

I'm not sure about that. When D300 and and D3 came out, both cameras were flying off the shelf, more so with D3 (probably less number of D3s were manufactured comare to D300). Currently, every camera stores have D700 in stock (at least last time when I checked) since the release. Unless Nikon has over manufactured them, I don't see it as selling hot. that's just my opinion

What might be happening is that everyone's waiting for Canon 5DMII. Everyone seen A900 and D700. Once 5Dii is released, I think we will see something happening. it would be interesting to see.

Where can I get a D700 for 1600 EUR? In China?

Yes - street price for a official Chinese warrantied Nikon D700 body.

If you go risky, you can even shave off another 50 - 100 EUR and buy a HongKong grey imported body (and loose all warranty by Nikon, but go with the shop warranty instead).

For a camera body, I would not go for the grey import and the shop warranty, as these shops open and close their small boots within a few months only the bigger shops remain for a longer time.
