horrible colors/shadows with LR2 raw conversion

I decided to try out Lightroom 2 and in some of the photos (but not all) the colors, and shadows especially, look horrible. This only happens if I use the RAW image (Nikon D200) so it must be the ACR. The two images below are both exported from LR2 with the first one using the NEF, and the second using the JPG. What is causing this?

You have the fill light control set too high on the first photo. This is not required as shadows are not dense.

There is an overall colour cast which may reflect the natural colour of the landscape but which can be adjusted using the WB control. You can also add some extra punch by increasing contrast & using the curve controls . Colours can be selectively boosted to spice up the image as well. Move orange sliders to the left & green & blue to the right

This may give you some idea of what can be done ,of course I don't know what the original scene looked like. It's overdone but will give you some idea for changes.

Thank you. Is there any way to bulk process photos in LR? For some reason, when I imported the photos LR decided to use 5200K/+10 (probably was the first one?) for all my photos, as opposed to using the WB information from the JPG, which would make more sense, or at least using LR's AutoWB for all the photos.

I also need to batch reduce the fill light, since LR gave me a default of 50%. I'd prefer not to reimport my photos.

Well, LR 2 doesn't use the JPG info. This is different from the NX softs from Nikon.

But you can batch process. E.g. if you have 100 photos that are similar, edit one and then in Library mode, with this photo selected, select the other ones as well. Right-click (PC) and choose sync settings.

You can also Sync settings while still in the Develop mode. Select the photo that has the settings you want to use.

Then, select the additional photos from the filmstrip at the bottom. The word 'Previous' (at the bottom of the right panel) changes to the word 'Sync' when you have multiple images selected. Click Sync.
From the dialog box that pops up, choose which settings you want to sync.

This sounds odd - ALL the photos you import (RAW) have the same WB and +50 Fill? If that is the case it sounds like the default for the camera has been changed.

In the case of the WB there may be many reasons, but I would doubt that the default for Fill light would be +50 - it maybe that somewhere along the line a photo was set to 50 Fill and that was set as the default for all future imports from this camera.

As it sounds like you haven't decided on a default camera setting in LR - I would reset it.

the WB from the JPG is no option. What is is "as shot" (reading from the RAW that is).
I do agree with other remarks.

All in my humble opionion of course!
(hope my English is sufficient. It's not my home-language)

Ensure the fill light default is set to 0 - you should only need to use this on occasional photos, and more than about 20 generally looks ugly
