A Closer Look: Macro Lessons Learned

... what? No vacation planned this week ? LOL

Nice macro gallery. I guess you'll be keeping the E-10 now. Have you been
printing many shots ? I am getting itchy for a companion to the Uzi, but
I'm holding out till the bitter end ! I have the need for some large
prints of 13 x 19 or larger. I've been printing a lot of shots for some
parents and coaches from my girls softball season. My 13 x 19 's are
actually awesome , but I'm sure a few more pixels wouldn't hurt. I
have been requested to shoot some football and also the fall softball
season coming up.

Anyways... nice work on the macros , and have a good holiday!

Tim,

Thanks for the look. I've actually printed only a few of the E-10 shots, but they are awesome! I do plan to do more printing, but I have been concentrating on getting the techniques down on the E-10 first. I think I made great strides with the shoot yesterday! Today I'm in search of the ultimate bumble bee and ladybug. If the weather holds, I try my luck at some fireworks this evening.

See ya,

jim

PS: I think the E-10 will serve you well. On the football and softball shots, if you are doing mostly posed stuff I think you will be fine. The "action" shots are not that great due to the slow write times to the card. There is a buffer there that will hold 4 monster-sized images shooting at the highest resolution, and you can increase this by shooting at a lower resolution. (like right!)

Jim,

This looks like some of your best work. Your advice probably doesn't apply to a camera with IS since it takes approximately a second to kick in - not that you need IS on all shots.

I've got a challenge for you. Since you do such good work with frames...

I want to see a picture that bursts out of the frame. Like a flower that just can't be contained by the little white lines. I'm sure you've seen this done. I've been trying with little success.

Again, excellent stuff.

Great shots Sandman!

Thanks for the tips! I will have to try them. I still have the camera set in Normal, Normal mode. So did you have to sharpen them in PS if you shot them in soft???
My favorite is the 2nd bee shot with the purple flower!

Examples like what you have in the gallery is exactly what I've been after in my attempts to get macro shots ( I tried a couple macros last nite and failed miserably)!! Your shots are great. I'm gonna have to try your technique to see if it helps me with sharpness in my close-ups.

Lucy,

You are correct on all three! (well I'm not exactly sure what those pea pod looking things are, but they sure were pretty!)

And hey, I got my bees and ladybugs! Uploading them to the computer right now. Maybe I'll get a chance to post one later today.

Thanks again,

jim

2b,

Thanks for the compliments. Great idea for the frame thing. I'll give it a try next chance I get. Thanks for the suggestion.

kim kaila,

Thanks for the compliments! It is interesting, with the camera in soft/soft, I had to do almost no levels adjustment. The levels histogram was perfect on almost every shot. (this means they were properly exposed, not too dark nor too light). I did do a quick sharpening using a technique I've been using for about a month now that I really like. Do you have PhotoShop? If so, let me know and I'll share my sharpening routine with you. I think it is the best and easiest sharpening technique ever!

Thanks again for looking and commenting,

dboogie,

Thanks for the compliments. I'm finally making some headway with the E-10! I found with the UZI, to get sharp macros, get close, zoom to fill the EVF with the subject, zoom in & out till you can get a focus lock. Certain that this is as close as you can get and still get a focus lock, back off just a hair with the zoom. At that point, focus and shoot!

I think the UZI will give you a focus lock in this "too close" spot, when in fact it can't quite focus that close. The backing off a hair lets you know you are out of that spot. Try it and please let me know. This is what works for me, but it may just be a quirk in my camera and not all UZIs.

Happy 4th and thanks for looking and commenting.

I'm really glad to see your learning the "personality" of your new camera! I know the Uzi is capable of taking good macros I just haven't found the technique that will allow me to capture it....just like when I was trying to figure out how to control my DOF, this too will take time and practice (I'll get it eventually) Thanks for the tips and I'll definitlely keep ya posted on any progress I make.

Jim,

No fair sharing your sharpening technique just with "La Kimmy"! Please post it here when you get a chance. Looks like your getting the hang of that E10.

I love #3...that's a WOW to me!

I have been trying to help KK with her macro shots...seems the MCON has a very shallow depth of focus and depth of field.

Your first two shots seem very soft on focus...not tack sharp...is that because you chose to use the soft/soft settings?

The last shot is much more in focus...but then it is flat on to the camera too.

And Happy 4th to you jim...may you truly have a wonderful and joyful day.

Real nice stuff Jim! (as usual)...

I see you're using soft/low...funny, I've been trying normal/normal just to see...I'm sure I'll go back to soft/low on my next shoot...

This one is my favorite...keep 'em coming,
Bob

After I read someone's complains in Oly SLR that the E-10 is the worst camera and that it's the camera that makes you a good photographer(really?),I just needed to see some good pics by a good photographer like you, shot by the E-10. It's really the photographer behind the camera that makes a difference. These are good examples to prove it.

Excellent shots as usual!

Hide,

That thread in the Oly SLR forum is mostly in jest. Some of the folks over there got tired of a few people saying how bad the E-10 is, so they posted some very good shots taken with the camera. It was a very funny thread.
