300 f4 IS + Canon 1.4x out in the field for real

That is one sharp picture using a TC. Equivalent of 420mm & with IS. That combo is moving up high on my shopping list.

Yeah it's a great setup. The amazing colors of the prime without the TC are also largely kept intact with the Canon converter (I had the Kenko and it's not as good in terms of focus, contrast and color).

I really like my 300 F4 IS and if I only needed 400mm occasionally the 1.4 converter would be OK but if you want 400mm most of the time get the 400 5.6L or the 100-400 IS.

That’s an awesome pic! 300/4 + 1.4TC is also my favorite set up. Great IQ, good reach on APS-C camera and easy to hand held or carry in hiking.

In my experience the 100-400 does not capture the detail of the Prime and TC, especially the colors. The 100-400 seems to have it's sharpness power along the edges, whereas the prime gives you it everywhere, even with TC.

The real key for me is the tonal seperation that exists even with the TC. Whites are white, creating a natural "pop" and organic look.

My copies of these lenses is a little different. My 300 is sharper than the 100-400 without the converter and about a push with the Canon converter but the converter really degrades the auto focus on the 300. The 400 5.6L is the sharpest of the three but is hampered by the lack of IS.

Do you guys really consider that a sharp pic? Keep trying you should get sharper photos under better lighting conditions.

Do it. Even Photozone rates the 70-300 better than the 100-400. The
300 is a jump up in overall IQ.
--Give me a break Montana 70-300 better than the 100-400? No way as it is well known you don't think much of the 100-400 but you are one of the few. I have owned the 100-400 off and on for years now and love the lens. I have a great one right now that I think is sharper than my last 400. I have seen many many samples of the 70-300 and I haven't been that impressed with it.

But I have to agree with the 300 it's a great lens that at times I think of selling my 100-400 and getting it again. But I love the zoom and can use a zoom more plus I love the pump action

Thx! That was 5.6 with TC(wide open), handheld at 1/250th with a level 3 sharpening in DPP and no other processing of any kind. Straight out of the camera(40D).
