Battle of the titans: Canon 100 f2.8 macro vs. Sigma 150 f2.8 macro

Wow, that sounds almost too good to be true! What a price... oh well, I have already placed my order so I'll miss out on that one. But what a price... wow!

Thanks, I'm pretty confident that this is the beginning of a long lasting good relationship with that lens. It will be so liberating to shoot macro instead of always using a microscope. It'll open up a whole new world to me.

Thanks for all the advice. Now that I think about it, the weight advantage will probably be a good thing as I'll have a stab at hand held macros as well and want to use the other hand to move the subject or play with lighting.

Next up will be a 1.4x converter then. Yummy...

I think you made a good choice now I know what you wanted it for. I
can't see the Sigma 150mm offering you much advanatage unless some
ice is a bit out of reach. For flower and insect photography there
are advantages to a longer lens - throwing the background more out of
focus or not scaring things.

well when i open a box with a pet rock and yoiu open a box with a 100mm macro then maybe the smiles will swap faces, haha

actualy the price was $490 + 15 shipping but http://www.live.com has a special where you get 30% (max $200) on a transaction on ebay using buy it now and paying with paypal put back in your paypal account.

so since they had pretty decent ratings, i think 99%, and are authorized dealer with a normal (not crazy scam) price, I think it should be ok (even though they are located in Brooklyn.... ok, pet rock it in box it will be)

anyway, enjoy the lens.

Be aware that the Canon 1.4x converter will not directly fit onto the Canon 100 macro. You will need to place an extention tube between the two. I use Canon's 1.4x II and am very pleased with it - especially with the 70-200/4, even fully open. Enjoy your new 100 macro - a fine lens and a joy to use!

That's true, some people already told me about their experiences with Sigma & Kenko converters that work even though the Canon original converter does not.

Incidentally, it's a good idea to add an extension tube even with the converter. Even more magnification, great!

Thanks, I can hardly wait for it to arrive. I'm psyched! Plus I already have some subjects ready that I can try it on.

Haha, who knows, at least it sounds perfectly legit. :)

Anyway, I'm happy and eagerly awaiting for the shipment to arrive early next week.

yeah it should be cool

anyway the live.com pet rock instead of a macro lens deal is only valid in the US I believe so no loss there you anyway.

that guy who marketed the pet rock is actually far, far richer than anyone in this forum (unless there is some mega-tier celeb or spors star lurking here, which I supposed is always possible). I think he is almost as rich as they guy who marketed brine shrimp as sea monkey families, haha!

and money is no objection ?

then a used Leica R 100/2.8 APO (probably the best of the lot ,goes only to 1:2 without an extension ring (use a thirdparty - the leica one is probably way overpriced)) or a used Micro Nikkor 200/4 ED IF would be worth considering. (Pricewise the last one should really be compared to Canon 180/3.5)

Zeiss ZF 100/2 and ZF 50/2 also nice, but expensive and MF too.

The Cano 1.4x TC has a protruding center element, while the Sigma and Kenko do not.

I do this a lot with my Sigma 150, works great.

But chose the Canon 100 macro anyway. So far I've only had the time to use it once, but was very happy with the result.

I've seen some samples from the Zeiss 100 macro and the bokeh seemed very nice in its own way.

Apart from a few test snaps in the kitchen, this is the first image I've taken with the new macro. Took it the day the lens arrived. :)
