Nice images, looks like a great place to be.

Do you think the optics in your 20mm AIS are the same as in my 20mm AF ?

Thanks Mark for your comment,

I have never owned the AF one but have tried it in a camera shop. People say that they are the same but I like the old metal Ais more (they also cheaper).
Bad thing is that I miss focus sometime :)

Thanks webbery,

The Macro is done by a Nikon 6T attached to the 20mm. D200 gives me a slight underexposed pictures so I adjusted level and curve in PhotoShop CS2.

I just got my AIS f2.8 version. I used the 20f2.8 af-d and found the corners and sharpness immediately lacking.

Of course there is sample variation and the AF-d I used may have been a bad sample. But, from my initial tests with the metal manual AIS the resolution/corners/colors are all better.

to the op.....great photo's!

Hello Ian,
Congrat for your new 20mm Ais. :)
It is a nice metal lens, isn't it?
Do you feel that focusing is smoother between 0.25-0.4m than Infinity-0.4 ?

I'm wondering if it something to do with Nikon's CRC or it is just my copy that does it.

SJ

I was just up there earlier this year, and it looks like we were at exactly the same spot!

I didn't notice it......but, there is a perceptible difference in pressure focusing between .4 and infinity. (it is minute though)

what really surprised me with this lens is that it's actually smaller than the 35 f2d.

My next step will probably be to get a Tokina 17mm f3.5 for a little wide angle shoot out.

I am really curious to see a real test between the 20mm ais and the af-d. I think there is definitely a difference between them even if they follow the same basic optical formula.

This series is absolutely stunning.
The composition and colors are fantastic.

However, I am not too excited about the mushroom photos
in particular because of the strange bokeh. What lens was used here?
Looks like maybe a lens baby.

You need to install Opanda IEXIF 2. If you did you would be able to right click on the image and see that it was shot at f/2.8 at 20mm. And yes, the Bokeh is a bit ugly isn't it.

I agree that the bokeh of the mushroom photo is strange and distracting.

In my opinion, it is not caused by the 20mm lens but by the Nikon 6T attached at the front of the 20mm to get a close up photo.

I haven't tested this out but the Nikon 20mm Ais generally gives nice bokeh.
what do you think?
