Could any one tell me if they've ever heard of Picture.com? They sent me a letter in the mail with a thumbnail sized version of my Smelt Fishermen pic asking me to complete a certificate of original work in the mail so that they can publish it in the nature catagorie of their Devine Discoveries hardcover book. I've never heard of them but do remember submitting the photo for a contest about six weeks ago. They say in the letter that I will be named ast the artist and that I will still own all rights to the photo and it doesn't seem like their asking for any money from me at all, but I thought it strange as I was only entering a contest for prizes, which they also say I've been made a semi finalist for but I'm pretty new to this stuff so I thought I'd ask if theres anything I should be worried about regarding this, any advice would be much appreciated.

Strange case! If you enter a contest and win they are allowed to publish a picture (if you agreed that while entering that contest). I think it is cheap way to fill a book with photo's. My suiggestion: send them a e-mail that you have the rights of that picture and ask them how much they pay you for publishing (using) the picture. In The Netherlands a puiblisher will pay you about 30 - 50 USD for a photo (for a hardcover book).

Same thing happened to me from the same company. They mentioned I won a photo contest I had entered a while back, and if I could sign a form to allow them to publish my photo in one of their upcoming hard copy books.

Sounded good, so I thought, when do I get a copy of the book... turns out when I pay them $50 or something.

The book isn't for sale in normal shops, only via their website, and of cause the only people who buy are those who have their pictures in it.

Technically, it's not a scam, but a different way to make a few bucks. Tell someone that they won a comp, and will get published if they sign, then offer them a copy of the book for $50.

I never bothered, but go for it if you like.

By the way, that is a very nice picture of yours.

I said it was a strange case. In The Netherlands we have the same publishers. Use a picture in a book and then sell the book to all the m akers of the photo's. This is not a good thing! It is legal but not done in my country. E-mail them and tell them that you are not going to pay but they have to pay you!

Ok thanks Jo, I was wondering what it was all about. Although they never said I've won anything yet, just that I made the semi finals and that they want the pic in their book regardless. They also didn't ask for any money unless I want a copy of the book, which I dont, lol.. but the letter does ask for my permission and thats basicly it. Perhaps I'll ignore it then...
