Just got my D90. It has an LCD protector with it (my D40 didn't and never needed one).

It says in the manual to use it to protect the LCD when not in use, But I see people with them permanantly fixed to the camera. It is clear after all. I am not going to take it on and off all the time.

Should it stay on or off?

Do you use yours?

Thanks Darin

Don't take it off and don't wipe it. It's extremely weak plastic. I use Nikon lens clean kit to clean the cover after I took off and saw dust on it. It produces scratches. Luckily, only visible under the sun. So, leave it on.

I suggest you get a GGS screenprotector. It's hardened glass in layers and it comes a two piece kit, one for the back LCD and one for the top. The glass is practically unscratchable. Price is around $20.

Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance or a stranger.

I'll be using ZAGG Invisible Shield with my D90. They haven't got the D90 version yet, so I purchased the D300 version.

If've been using the LCD protector on my D80 and D90 all the time for more than 1.5 years. Never felt that I should take it off, cleaned now and than.

I overlooked the fact that the D90 version isn't available yet, I got one for my D80. Could be a matter of 2-3 weeks. What I have against the original Nikon protector is that I always fog it up leaving the vapor between the display and the protector.

I don't understand why you would need one. My D40 doesn't need one. Why do the other cameras? Are they different? Who cares if you get dust or a couple of scratches on it? It still performs its function.

Yes that is really my question.

I never scratched my D40 LCD.

guess I'll leave it on in the meantime. Dosn't seem to affect the veiwing.

I keep it on just so i don't have to worry about the screen. You never know when u might bump the camera on something and then there goes your lcd. Besides if it doesnt impare your view why would you not use it?

Fair comment.

I havn't noticed it imparing the view but wondered if it might in certain light...eg more reflections oer something.

I guess I will be leaving it on for now :-)

thanks Darin

I lost mine during the first "outing" at a friends wedding. I noticed that it was not on there too tightly, and when I took the camera out of the bag several days later, I noticed it was gone. Be careful with yours.

I suppose this is one of those degrees of "anal." issues. I'm low on that scale and don't see the point of having an LCD screen only to obscure it with a piece of plastic. I tossed mine off when unboxing and tossed it in the box. It's really mean to protect in shipping and in stores like BB where morons like to treat the display models like rag dolls.

I use generic LCD screen protector film I put on all my electronic devices (cameras, iPods, etc.) You can buy it online for cheap. It's way overpriced most B&M stores. It's about .5 mil thick and crystal clear. I've never had an issue with and LCD screen on any device I've owned or still own though.

If you are really rough on your equipment that you think your LCD is going to get really scratched up then maybe the D90 isn't for you and you should go up to a more rugged body like the D300.
