When are Canon Japan going to get off their butt and do something about the problem.
Turning off the AF to enable the E-TTL to work is not a solution.
Using work around are not solutions.
We should all write E-mail telephone Canon Japan to get something done.
If this fails take the camera back and get a refund.

To not work on the first DSLR was bad but to not work on all they produce is unforgivable

First time I shot with the 550EX & D60 I didn't understand what ETTL was trying to do. After reading threads on this forum I got excellent results, better than I had got previously with TTL flash and a Nikon 35mm SLR.

I've never had to turn off the AF to get E-TTL to work on either the Sigma EF-500 Super or built-in flash on my D30. Care to elaborate?

With the lens switched to AF, ETTL exposure is based heavily on the active focus point. As long as you understand this, and adjust Flash EV, and/or use FEL, accordingly, results are perfectly consistent.

With the lens switched to MF, ETTL exposure is based on an evaluative type reading, with no emphasis on any focus point. Some people prefer to use this option, but it certainly isn't mandatory.

So ETTL works in both AF and MF, and as long as you understand how it works, you can get perfectly consistent results.

That said, I, and many others, feel that Canon really needs to offer the user the option to enable an 'evaluative' type ETTL exposure on its own, without having to go into MF. We should be able to select the type of metering ETTL uses, just as we do with ambient light exposure. But so far, unfortunately, that's not an option.

E-TTL is advertised to work by making flash photography as easy as with ambient light. Point and shoot. That’s what you pay for in the specification.
It only works with using work around.
Example.
Photograph say two people against a dark background.

Auto Focus on the face of one of the subjects using say the center focus point by pressing the release half way, AF works and takes a light reading hold that pressure while you reframe the shot.
This moves the center focus point onto the dark background.
The result would be a white out.

Because the flash reads the active focus point for its reading and fires accordingly.

Its not supposed to work like this. It is supposed to work by taking an evaluative reading.
Work arounds .
Press FEL when taking the initial ambient AF measurement.
Turn off AF.
Not exactly point and shoot.
In a high speed action situation no chance of getting it right.

Auto Focus on the face of one of the subjects...
... moves the center focus point onto the dark background.
As DonCohen said, it is all about understanding HOW E-TTL works. Then it works GREAT.

Doing what you are describing above is a bad thing to do, and could fool many an exposure control even without using flash. Use the FEL if you want to do as described above.
