Firstly apart from getting into digital photography and marrying my wife buying this lens is the best thing I ever did. My photos finally have that quality I was looking for and never quite achieving, in technicality at least :)

I'm wondering if other 17-55 owners experience the same loose quality of the zoom ring at around 17-19mm. It seems to have no resistance at all at this length and I'm sure that it would be easy to change focal length while taking a shot because of this.

Is this common or does it need to be tightened?

I just checked the zoom ring on mine.

it is not loose. It feels smooth and consistant throughout the entire zoom range, although its more "snug" when zooming out than when zooming in.

Yes this is the same as mine the loss off resistance at the same point means that it feels very loose.

I think I'll live with it and see if anything changes. I haven't heard anyone mention it's a problem but I bet it's quite common so probably not worth worrying about.

Thanks!

Mine's the same.

Going from from 55-17 is smooth, but going from 17-55, it snugs from from 17-22 then it's smooth. I heard it's designed that way to prevent zoom creep.

"Function as designed" I like that hehe. Just put a clear filter on the lens so no dust gets in also...

I think you must have a dud ;-)

They are supposed to be lumpy and horrible. Mine was (and every other 17-55 I handled in the shops was the same.)

LOL. They designed it to feel horrible to prevent zoom creep?

I think it has more to do with the amount of glass that they have to slide around inside and the fact that the elements move in non-linear amounts.

But knowing "why" doesn't make it feel less horrible.

I really think the build quality on this lens is dreadful considering the price point, even if it is optically very good.

In terms of the feel of the zoom ring it's the worst lens I have/had. But it is brilliant in terms of IQ.

This strange feeling on the zoom ring does not change over time (at least in my copy). Some folks suggested it dimnishes over time (as mechanisms inside get worn) but not in mine.
