Poll: Do we need an AF assist light on the E-XX ?

Don't get it why OLY

"just" don't add it on ... with all the complaints about the strobing and the Low Light focusing.
HG
the little lens (about 2 o'clock looking at the camera) or is that
some kind of socket?
Also seems to have WB sensor (about 11 o'clock) and the remote sensor
(on grip)

Love f2 Oly lens wide open ... 14-35mm f2, & a 50mm f2+1.4TC is my fav. combo on two 'IS' oly bodys.

Is Nikon the only major DSLR maker with a separate AF assist light? It looks like Canon, Sony and Pentax all use the built in flash.

If Oly don't include an AF assist light, they should improve the way the flash works for AF assist.

On the E-510 it flashes for AF assist when it could easily focus without it, and this actually slows down the AF. The light threshold should be lowered so it only strobes when it really needs to. Or try to focus without it then only strobe if it can't lock without it.

Also they should add cabability to separately set the AF assist with or without an external flash. I'd like to use the AF illuminator on my external FL-nnr flash, but when I am not using the external flash, to not have that darn strobing. As it is now for flash shots without the external flash I need to remember to turn off the AF illuminator, then turn it back on when I use the external flash again.

Yes, even had one on my good old E-100RS....

I almost sent my E-3 back to Henry's on noting it didn't have a deep red focus assist light!
A mini maglite, mounted on the tripod socket would be a cheap
work-around. Leave it turned on, or turn it off after locking focus.

Notr a bad idea. However, the problem with most such makeshifts is that while they ,may work some, even most times, they generally get in the way - both in handling the camera, and, of course of a tripod. They also add more bits and pieces rememder, carry andf service

Hi Olympus ! yes, but it should not delay E-XX production [nt]

The first thing I did after I picked up my new E-520 was to completely disable the strobe flash in the camera settings. When using the center AF point I did not notice a serious slow-down in focus speed. Which to me is not a miracle, as the 520 is quite slow in low light anyway. At least I got rid of the strobes, and will never turn the function on, again.

I also tried it on a 420 - the focus struggled much more then the 520's did.

So Olympus, we are getting impatient to wait for this tiny, cheap accessory.
