new d3x rumor starting

I think they would have made the announcement at photokina if they had something. I'm guessing a few months away before any substantial upgrades.

Nikon D300 and assorted lenses

I was in a Penn Camera store in Northern Va last weekend and asked the sales rep if he knew anything about the D3X and he told me that a few people he knew were already shooting with the 24mp camera from Nikon. He also said that they were disappointed in its performance. Something about the image sensor and the pixel size that was not as good as the D3. I'm no expert by any means but that is what he told me. He did seem to be telling it straight but who knows.

..even a "yep, something's brewing...that's all I can say and it's not a second information." with a smiley face confirmation would be interesting!

Unless the feed back they were given was so bad they needed to keep it under wraps.

It almost looks like a view of a sensor with no mirror, akin to the Pentax G1. Could it be a larger format live-view only SLR???

Yikes, I just attained a new level of geek-ness!

the mount is huge compared to the grip, and is positioned higher.

Probably doesn't really mean anything but here's a comparison of the relative size of the control wheel vs sensor between the two cameras.

Not much to use as a scale, but with the D100, D200, D300, D700 the front wheel AFAICR has always been about the same size. If this continues to be true in this case the "MX" Big Deal is about 50% larger than an FX sensor.

Lots of things can be wrong with this comparison but for speculating it's a starting point.

So. . .If the lens mount is the same, how can they get a sensor that is about 50% wider inside the same size lens mount? Oh and they would have to keep the distance from the lens mount to the sensor the same.

Unless it is a larger lens mount.

I think, that, I shouldn'T participate in rumor mongering but...

I'm gonna !

I think the big notes are the lack of the screw drive, and the possible lack of a mirror.

While your d700 comparison has a couple faults, do look at the shape of the red cross section, it's rather different.

I am going to guess, that we can't conclude anything about the scale of the two cameras... Assuming the actual body of the other camera is much larger, the sensor/mount could just be proportionally larger.

I would guess that the lack of a mirror, doesn'T really point to an SLR, even one with a live viewfinder --- I am guessing this will be a rangefinder model. But hey, it's just a guess

Knowing japanese, big, okii in this case definitely means large or big, and not "great". It's possible that the announcement itself will be big, or the camera, or the sensor... It's also a very high context culture, so we could equate that with number of pixels. It could just as easily mean that it's a big step for nikon. From the imagery, we know that It is certainly related to a new camera.

But hey, we'll find out eventually. I'm not worried about it, I've got the camera of my dreams =D

Are they talking rangefinder type camera here and if so, WHY would anyone want a rangefinder type camera. Not very practical I think..
