I have to warm-boot my PC after every attempt to shut off my PC. Usually it powers down and off after the 2nd. try. XP is fully up to date with all the service packs. RegSeeker and System Mechanic keep everything bare bones clean several times a week. Nothing in SysMech is enable or scheduled to run in the background and Adware keeps the nasty cookies cleaned out.
Where might I look to solve this annoying shut down pain in the U_no-what?
Thanx,Stv.

--Any app like the alters the registry wholesale can cause a lot of damage fast if not used correctly, but this sounds like a driver or app not shutting down. Any recent updates or changes? What's Event Viewer show?

Will the machine shut down normally in safe mode? If so start witch hunting using msconfig until the offending program or service is located. If it's been more then a year since a reload... maybe it's getting time.

Hey any movie peeps need a rigger? Blackhawk for hire.

good idea is also the check the event log for "failure" events.

Hello I had a simular problem my computer it would just hang on shutting down ,I use XP with sp3 ,I found that a program update was causing the problem ie zonelabs so I removed it and now use a different firewall ,my system now works fine. Have you tried using msconfig to stop programs starting this way you can isolate any problems one at a time, not trying to teach you to cook eggs but when it happerned to me It drove me mad

--ZA goes nuts sometimes, but uninstalling it, then reinstalling it will "cure" ZA almost 100% of the time. It's such a useful app, and free too that a little mischief can be forgiven.

Thanx for the input.

-The system hangs on shutdown intermittently.

-I've used the three utilities mentioned above for many years now. Although very powerful, they have not caused very many issues to date.
-System can not find MSCONFIG !!! when typed into "RUN".

-Last week there were updates from MS for Sev.Pk3 when this issue started to happen.
-Have not attempted the Safe Mode shutdown tests yet.

--SP3... oh my.

Just kidding, but try a system restore IF that will remove SP3 and if it's possible to do.
No MSconfig?

You can try using the "sfc purgecache" and then the ""sfc scannow" command to repopulate any missing or damaged Windows system files. Try that first, you'll need the OS CD, and the SP3 install may made it harder or impossible to do easily.

Haha..... don't laugh, I know just enough to get me into a lot of trouble !!
I tried a system restore but no difference.

These commands I am unfamilliar with.

Loaded xp disc and system said OS was newer than disc and to reboot and load OLD XP OS? .......... not willing to do that as it will delete all data. I guess there is no system repair option then?

Thanx again ....Stv

These are great tools provided by MS, google it. The SFC SCANNOW command won't harm the OS and will many times repair it.

The SFC SCANNOW needs to access the CD for copies of the system files; DO NOT do a repair or anything in the OS CD menu! When the menu options appear, simply close it's box, and let SFC run, don't open anything until it's done. If it asks for SP3, or the OS CD while it's running, click the continue option (I think that's it). It should run straight through, but sometimes not depending on the system it's loaded on. After it's done, remove the CD and reboot. You'll know if it worked, and many times it does.

It was in fact the power supply. Replaced it with a bigger one and no problems since. Probably too many disks.

Hi Stv,

Windows XP Pro is my all-time favourite OS and I have spent years tweaking it for speed and I have gotten it to almost bare bones running with very few SERVICES enabled that are absolutely necessary.

Regarding your SHUTDOWN problems, I've also encountered that a few months ago. During that time, I experimented with many 'shutdown' tweaks many of which either did not work or made no difference but I now have a PC that boots very quickly and also shuts down very quickly and it's been consistently good. I cannot backtrack to what I did that actually fixed the problem but I recommend the following fixes:

Lexus RegScrubXP 3.25
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2048
(click on MISC... and there's a tweak to "Shutdown XP Faster"

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Tweak # 76 (right column) "Auto End Tasks to Enable a Proper Shutdown"

I just created a Shutdown shortcut on the desktop for times when I am absolutely late for an appointment and NEED to rush out.

The following command line is used ...

"SHUTDOWN.exe -s -t 01" (without the parenthesis)

Get ATF Cleaner from attribune.org

Stop using system mechanic, and adaware, etc. and try ATF instead. It is instantaneous and thorough.
Doesn't install, it is a standalone executable you can put anywhere.
Try it for a week or two and let the OS heal.
Just my $0.02

--Ccleaner too, but that won't solve this issue.

If anything the OS may start to BSOD if this shutdown issue isn't resolved. Start up and shut down problems with XP should always be taken seriously... one more critical error event could BSOD it on boot. Widows will tolerate one critical error on boot many times, but not two.

Click start, run
enter cmd
hit enter
in the black command window, type chkdsk f
hit enter

when it says it cannot do it while files are in use, would you like to do it next time windows restarts? hit y (for yes) and hit enter.

reboot the machine, and let it do it's disk check.
see if anything improves.

--It's a good utility, but it won't repair a damaged system file or driver. Same for an app or service that's refusing to shutdown, and that's what's going on. Disc check may find a damage sector which might have started this, but most times it isn't hardware problems that crash XP. Drivers and poorly written apps are the #1 cause.

Thanx gents. Been very busy this weekend and not had time to try all of the suggestions YET. However, I did try the cmd, chkdsk c and I got ; "Errors Found" - chkdsk cannot continue in read-only mode.

I'll try the "check for errors" in disk properties c next.

Thanx all.............. I'm work'n on it. The OS still hangs but does not freeze/lock at least the last few shutdowns.
reboot the machine, and let it do it's disk check.
see if anything improves.

I've had this problem for a week or so and thought it was to do with updating programme for my Sony DSLR (Picture Motion Browser) which was doing a re-start at the time. Whether this actually was a factor I don't know, but the problem seems to have been Zone Alarms Security Suite. Downloading the latest beta version seems to have resolved it. ZA seem to be aware of some issues with version 80...20, hence the beta release.

Ya, something is going on! I thought it might be a virus or a worm. My Norton anti virus was giving a constant update error messages after several utility and SP3 updates. Not sure which one is responsible but the Norton suddenly healed itself a few days ago !!!
