Which Sony/Minolta flash would you buy as someone who has not used an external flash before and will only use it periodically. I have a KM5d and am looking for an external flash, mostly for the occasional family group shot, or reunion shot, etc. Thanks.

I would recommend looking for a Sony HVL-36 or Minolta 3600D (same flash). They have been discontinued but can still be found new at many retailers for $150-200. It's a good flash that will give you plenty of power with bounce and wireless capabilities if needed.

Thanks for the recommendation. I know this is a basic question, but am I right to assume that either flash (the 36 or the 3600) will connect directly to the 5d's hotshoe without any adapter? Thanks.

This sounds ilke a reasonable approach to me. I used the predessor flash to these on my film camera's for many years. Unfortunately, they don't work with the digital cameras.

You are correct. It also works off camera and can be controlled by the popup flash (with auto exposure). Very handy feature for portraits and creative lighting effects. The flash comes with a hot shoe foot stand that has threads allowing t to be connected to a standard light stand or tripod base also.

you should buy the Best flash that you can afford, but the 36 will work.I would consider the next step above.

Would the 42 be considered the next step above the 36? I cannot come close to affording the 56/58. Is the 42 really worth $100 more than the 36? Thanks for the opinions.

I have the KM3600 and it doesn't swivel. Don't know if the Sony equal does swivel. I have 2 Sigma DG500 Supers and am very happy with them.
