4500 = 885 replacement?

When I look at the Nikon line:

2000
2500
885
4500
5000
5700

I see that the 885 is now the oldest camera, and no longer fits the numbering scheme. I also note that the 8xx and 9xx series have been linked in recent versions:

880 = 990
885 = 995

so, can I deduce that I should wait for the 885 to be replaced before upgrading from my 775? (I can wait till November, when I go on holiday to Australia).

That's probably a safe bet. If you look at the timeline, Nikon seems to replace their camera's a little over a year after they're out. According to the timeline the 885 was in August of 2001 while the 995 was in April. Going by that logic, maybe October? One thing I always liked about my Coolpix 800 was the small size relative to the 950, but got tired of the 2 megapixel, 2x zoom. I think the 4500 would work for me though so I might just end up getting that instead. Got a used Olympus 3020 in the meantime so I can wait a bit. (The nice thing about buying used is that you don't lose too much when you sell it used a few months later.)

Anyway, just looking at your numbers, maybe it'll be called the 3500.

Although I love my 885 tremendously... my suggestion is to wait. The 885 does offer more megapixels and offers more manual settings, but I would wait. The 775 is a great camera as well.

Why are you looking to upgrade? What do you need that your 775 doesn't have. The reason I ask is because I recently was thinking about upgrading cameras, esp after the announcement of the 5700, but after some thought, I decided to stick with my 885. You have to see what fits your needs and what type of shots you are going to shoot. The 8X zoom is nice, but I don't shoot in enough locations where that is requred. I'm a casual vacation shooter, macro shooter, and occationally I like to do more creative things, but nothing that requires a zoom. This is just one example. Okay, I'll stop with the bordom. That is my 2 cents. Good luck.

3 mega-pixels.

I have to say though, I was going through my 775 pics recently, and you know, they aren't so bad!

You need a username and password to get into the areas that you
posted, or else it's a no go.
Sorry. I'll put them on my iDisk and try again.

Is the last picture (of the plant) one that really gives off a horrendous odour?

I think there is one that looks very similar that smells like rotten eggs.... I saw it on the news last year.

LOL! I read the subject and thought you were talking about my photos! Yes, it is that smelly plant from Kew Gardens in London (not native to London obviously). When we got there it wasn't smelly, it only gave off the smell at certain times of the day.
