I wonder if this is bad or good news ?, I pre-ordered on the day it was announced through Amazon and now notice their status has changed to something a lot more concerning. Does this indicate I made their allocation before the ‘sign up to be notified’, most interesting.. ?

Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available.
Request this item from another seller.

Note on Availability: This item is in high demand and supplies from the manufacturer are limited. Its availability fluctuates, and if the item is not currently in stock, we cannot guarantee that we will receive additional quantities in a timely manner. Orders are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

I think/hope it's good news for you and me as I also pre-ordered on the 17th. I think this just means that anyone who didn't order within the first couple days will be waiting on second, third, forth shipments.

The notification signup is separate from the pre-order. My order confirmation says that I'll automatically be notified of an arival and ship date when that info becomes available.

No call. I got an email stating I would be notified of a ship date when available, though.

I did already have an amazon.com account and have ordered from them before. Additionally, I have an amazon.com credit card (cool because when you use it, money accumulates to the amazon.com account). I don't recall ever receiving a call from them. Maybe because I'm a regular customer.

I didn't get a call, also was curious on how long I'd been buying off Amazon, my history tracks back 10 years, so I hope I fall into the trusted purchaser and loyal account category

And for today’s irrelevant facts, my oldest purchases I could see was the books 'still me' ‘neither here nor there’ as presents, funny how our tastes change.. Happy Wednesday

odd...2 links..
Essentially one link; both of them just happen to have some extraneous data. Everything after "B001G5ZTLS" is irrelevant to locating the item in their system.

My 1D III was from the first batch. That was a mistake.

I'll buy a 5D II after prices drop AND after the first firmware update.

I coulda had a V8 -- but I bought a 1D Mark III instead

Just curious why was it a mistake? what was wrong with the III? I am asking because I have always waited till it was in the hands of competent users for a while before ordering...and this time I am one of the first I hope..perhaps I should back off and wait for 2nd batch as usual?..thanks..t

Adorama dealers should be on crack too:

"Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting Adorama,
As per our system this item should arrive at Adorama on 10/20/08. "
Well, my dealer here in Austria says the same - available by mid of
Oct.!

That would be great, but I simply can't believe this...

hmm... if there might be any problem, and it can be solved by a firmware update, then I can do this on my own after the purchase. I don't see the benefit in not having the camera, and waiting for new ones with new firmware?

Don't get me wrong, I love my 1D III and I use it every day. I've taken 100,000+ shots with it. And it has already paid for itself many times over. I'll be buying another.

But my 1D III was one that suffered from the infamous focusing problem. It's now fixed and is superb, but the first six months with the camera were, at times, very frustrating. Today, I would not hesitate to recommend the 1D III to anyone. As for delaying an acquisition of a 5D II, I think I'll just wait for the dust to settle.
