Hi, I just down loaded my first images (all shot in RAW) with my new D300 to my pc.

It seems I can only view my images using Nikon View. I'm not able to view them with Windows or with Capture NX. Every time I attempt to view or edit images in NX, errors immediately occur in Windows and it shuts down.

I was able to convert one image to jpeg as a test in View, and then was able to open it in NX.

I loaded the supplied software that came with the D300 to my pc, and all RAW images from my D100 still open just fine in both Windows and NX. Any idea why the D300 RAW images won't open?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks.

They have a NEF codec that will let you view RAW files in Windows Vista. The software works fine on my machine. Try uninstalling it and reinstalling it again.
Good luck.

At the very early nef samples from the D300 ( at its release) i tried to download one to my desktop from a site. It crashed the windows explorer and i had to reinstall the Vista. You have to download the Nef codec as said on the post above...

I appreciate the replies, but is the codec really necessary? I'm able to view RAW images just fine from my D100.

I uninstalled the software that was supplied with the D300, and installed it again, but my problems remain.

It was for me. And its not that hard to do it. Now i see my NEFs from the D300 with no problems. Just to make it clear, that was with my computer, so im NOT advising you to do it. Its up to you the decision.

Everytime Nikon releases a new camera, they have to release an update to their software that allows it to display the new RAW files from the new camera. So if you have an older version of NX that can display D80 files, unless you apply the update, it wont' be able to display D90 NEFs. So check to make sure you have the latest version of NX to be sure it supports the NEFs from your D300.

Thank you for the replies and the link. I downloaded the link and it did solve some of my problems.

I am now able to import and view the images using Windows, but I still can't open the D300 images in NX. Every time I attempt to open an image with NX, I get "unable to load image 001nef".
Any other suggestions?
Thanks again.

Every new camera's NEF files are unique to that camera. Even Nikon's own software must be updated to open them. I don't have NX2, but I can open D300 files without a problem. The latest update to NX was necessary.

What version of CaptureNX are you running?

It's just Capture NX that I purchased November of last yr. I haven't upgraded to NX2.

I did download the link provided by rickthestick in a previous post, and as I stated that seems to have fixed my Windows probs, but NX still won't open RAW images.

If you have Vista 64 you are out of luck. I tried Vista 64 again after a drive problem and found that many programs will not run. The Nikon Codec will not work and Nikon NX will not run properly. I believe that NX2 needs Visata 32 also. I have down graded to Vista 32 from a back up disk image and most things work ok. I have redone one computer to XP Pro and everything seems to work. You cannot downgrade a new laptop to XP as you need the drivers. I believe most will accomidate a Vista 32 bit downgrade. I got so frustrated I just bought an IMac with 4 1T firewire external drives and a second LCD Moinitor.

Thanks Dez, I just tried that. Unfortunately, it didn't make a difference. It still says "unable to load" every time I try to open a D300 RAW image.
I'll have to contact Nikon.

NX2 2.1.0 on new Vista prem 64 bit here and it works great for me! (Q9300 6GB RAM) seems much faster than NX was on my old machine which admittedly was an older P4 and was loaded down with too much stuff and too little RAM.
