So here goes:

About a month ago I purchase a brand new D3. It had 4 hot pixels. Go back to my dealer, after lots of ums and ahh-ing they decide to give me a new one. Fine. Got home, the new model has got one hot pixel. Fine. I take a few days off so I can travel to the Nikon Service centre to get it mapped out. Get home, nope, still there - go back AGAIN on monday, and they say "oh, we didn't touch it when it was first here!!!! (*$#$%@#!!!!!!! So, get home, yes, it's now fixed. So started shooting away, doing a bunch of shots at f8 (2 seconds exposure) ......all of a sudden there are like 20 odd purple/black and yellow hot/stuck/dead pixels all down the left hand side. Long exposure noise reduction does NOTHING.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to call my dealer AND nikon service and demand my money back - or a D3 that works. I'm over it.

Don't even get me started on the dust that's on the inside elements of my over AUD$2K 24-70 lens.

What a joke.

You might want to consider a 5D Mk II instead, it does HD video.

f8, 2 sec exposure . . . . just out of interest . . . what ISO ?

Take a look at my album . . . http://www.F1Album.com

select multiple exposures, ISO 1600 and under expose a shot of a dark room f/22 @ 1"
then before you shoot the next frame, look at the image.
On my 8-month old D3, it looks like there are xmas lights.

That's funny...Nikon should have a warning label on all their cameras.

"Extreme pixel peeping can lead to psychotic behavior you may want to contact your family doctor before purchasing one"

especially at high ISO or long exposure.

I work around them.

provide software so you can remap your sensor yourself and program NX2 to take care of hot pixels when you open an image for editing.

..the beginning from ISO 2500 onward. With my 5D, there were many more hot/stuck pixels starting at ISO 800 in shadow areas. Most of my RAW converters process these pixel errors out (for certain, Lightroom and ACR do), and I don't shoot JPEGs, so nothing for me to worry about because, regardless, these pixels are easier to deal with that spotting dust and scratches from scanned film.

If you are a JPEG shooter, get one of the APS-C Canons. In my experience, none of those models ever had stuck or hot pixels at any ISO.

Good luck.

Very funny although A$6K for a Nikon body is not a small amount of
money. I expect the thing to WORK.

I, too, was shocked by the amount of dust over the front and rear elements of my 24 – 70 when I took it out of the box. Until now, every single Nikon lens that I have ever purchased has been flawlessly clean when I opened the bag and took off the lens caps. I thought my 24 – 70 must have been a very rare aberration. I bought mine in California so if people in Australia are having the same problem, then perhaps Nikon needs to step up quality control at the factory.

I was swearing at my D3... for a lot of reasons.
one was these obviously dead pixels that kept jumping around.

found out 1/2 way through the night that the bride and the maids had sparkles in their hair.

Hi dl3

Yes it's pretty sad - I'm almost tempted to buy a bunch of Zeiss lenses - and go with manual control - at least I'd be guaranteed of a better finished end-product. Nikon seem to be all about the churn and burn at the moment. I could have the dust blown out by the service centre but........

My D100 had to go back twice to get a a decent sensor clean. I normally do it myself but since I was there getting the CCD re-mapped I thought yep, may as well see how good the "pros" can do it. What a joke.

Hi revaaron

Mate, you are one of the few guys who have been posting here for years (and I've noticed you're a big Nikon user)....so I appreciate your input. I know I'm asking a lot (just for the mega-buck thing to work) but really, I don't think Nikon should be allowed to get away with selling faulty gear. A lot of manufacturers have been getting sloppy.

I bought a "good" quality wrist watch last year which had to go in for 3 separate warranty issues. It's all about the $$$ these days - profits, profits, profits.
