Advice needed - which PC?

Peter, spend 30 minutes to an hour on the IMAC... I wear glasses and have a lot of window light in my home office and after playing for 45 minutes on the new Imac in the store, I realized the highly reflective screen would not work in my home environment. It became a giant mirror after a while and gave me eye strain... Just my experience.

The old 24" white Imacs had a matt finish screen and were much easier on the eyes, but the apple stores do not stock refurbs of that machine any more.

Yes Robbie, you got it right. I just would add that if peterwis can assemble his own PC, he will spare some $ that can be invested in some good lens...

On the software side, you can start from Irfanview or Picasa to the more complex and complete Photoshop. For my pictures , I use ACDSee Pro2 and allows me to make everything I need.
Last but not least, what do we use most on this hobby? .....yes, our eyes !

Peterwis get yourself a good monitor , that's the best investment ! If you go for the fabulous iMac 24, beware of following detail: the iMac's screen is only delivered glossy and that can be annoying because of the unwanted reflections that might appear.
Best of luck!
