Well I appiled for permission from my local member for domestic affairs and was given the go ahead to trade up to the K20D.

Man, what a camera. Such an improvement over the K10 and that was a great camera to begin with. The refinements are so nice, for those still umming and arring on getting one or to those newbies on the Pentax scene wondering if you should, here's my observations (all others, scroll down for some images):

Shutter sound - first thing i noticed, definately quieter - i'll be more comfortable snapping away in a church during a wedding ceremony.

Exposure - it's bang on all the time. I used to think it was me getting it wrong whenever I had exposure issues with the K10. Nup. The 20 blows it out of the water. Bang on. Unsure if I'll always use the D-Range feature, it sometimes seems to underexpose too much.

Focus - It is noticeably faster and definately more accurate. My 77 is the only lens so far that i've dialed in a significant amount of adjustment, a quick hack test of all my lenses only so far. I'll do some more testing, but the AF is just better anyway. It locks and stays locked and it's right on, it doesn't need to hunt. Did I say it was quicker? ;)

Higher ISO Noise - awesome, I'm so pleased. ISO800 is totally useable, 1600 too if need be though some more noise, but in all better noise than the K10D sensor IMO. I'm unsure how much NR to use in camera if at all. So far the Weak setting is good, but then C1 4 still applies too much - they haven't written an algorithm to adjust accordingly if the in-cam NR has been applied. Basically the default noise setting for the K20 in C1 4 is overkill IMO, too much detail lost.

Anyhoo, on to some photos. Nothing special, no PPG candidates here but just a wander around nearby home on a glorious London autumn day.

M100/4 Macro

Crop of above

DA16-45 (still a really fine lens, perhaps even better on a K20)

F70-210 (The improvement in IQ from the *istDL to K10 with this lens was impressive, just better again with the 20)

Two lots of wire fence here, I did my best.

M100/4 Macro

Sorry you're so disappointed by the upgrade, Ben :)

Not having had a K10 before my K20 I wasn't sure how significant a change it would be. Obviously more than I thought.

Good to see that M100 being put to use.

Cheers,

Guy

Thanks for the info. The images are just stellar!

I am holding out with my 2 K10s for now but getting a little nervous with another wedding possibly coming my way. I just can't see spending the money on the bodies right now. Rather invest in some Pocket Wizards and lighting first.

Be well,

I was no doubt saving this comment for an email, but I may as well say it here. I can just imagine your own delight at upgrading from the trusty DS to the K20. It must have been quite an eye opener. I know the DS served you well as it has with some many other Pentaxians, but the K20 is quite a leap. I was somewhat spoilt by having a K10 after my DL but the K20 is definately a camera to keep for some time to come.

And the old M100/4 Macro of yours will certainly get some use now. Being able to use higher ISO's more effectively when not having a tripod handy is a big advantage.

Do you remember how old this lens is?

I'm going to feel so much more confident shooting weddings with this. Knowing the exposure will just work instead of having to guess a bit at times. I also picked up a Metz 58 flash to replace my dead Sigma. So far that has been impressive too, quicker charge time.

Sorry I missed out on the shoot!

Any fool can take a picture OF something. Its much harder to take a picture ABOUT something.

Walk around shots indeed, a few looked awfully darn good to me! I have the 10 and was thinking about waiting for the 30, but your tale of the 20 (and the shot postrings) makes it awful tempting. Though 20 or 30 I'll still be waitng a good while since my live-in financial manager won't be apptoving funding any time soon!

Once again, loved the shots and keep them coming. Congrats on the purchase.

I have an old Metz 54 which I can still use on my ancient DS or in manual or Auto on the K10. It does get used on occasion and I will not part with it. It is almost bomb proof and very reliable.

You'll pay with interest and you'll be glad you did ;)

It had better not be first person at your wedding or you'll pay 100x.

I had no problems with my 77 nor other fast primes on the K100 or the K20. Quicker, yes. I tried my DFA 100 (no focus limiter) with the K100 and K20 once. The K100 hunts, the K20 locks on rock solid.

Nice captures. I like the backlit yellow leaves.

Congrats and best wishes on your nuptials.

I had had it all that long before passing it on to you. According to Bojidar's site they were made between 1977 and 1984.
