Please help! How do I remove the background from a photo?

I have a magazine I print that a lot of times I have a photo that I would love to remove the child from it and place it on the front cover without the busy background so that it would allow me to add text aroound it and it show up. I have photoshop LE is all. Can I do that with that? If so how?

I posted a picture here as an example of one that I might want to remove the background. Appreciate any help I can get. I have seen magazines where they have kids on the front but no background. SO they are simply an object. But I do not know how they do that. I assume I don't have the right tools to do so and or knowledge. This is a photo my hubby took of our Grandson with the E-10

Thanks for your input!

There are a bunch of different ways. I like to use the magnetic lasso tool to frame the part I want to remove, then cut and paste. Others may have an easier way.

I have PS LE at work, and I don't care for it as much as Elements that I use at home. I can't justify the price of PS 7, but Elements at $69.00? was a good purchase for me..

T & T, You can accomplish this w/PS LE. Open your pic, select the lasso tool, trace the subject. Next, go to Edit and select copy. Next, go to File and select new. Make the new canvas whatever size you need and OK it. Now, go to Edit and select paste. It will paste your subject on a plain bkgrnd. Regards, Jim N'AZ

Hi Teri,

Another good method is the Extract command in PS. It is especially good for extracting images with fine details such as hair from the background. It is much more precise than the more common Selection tools.
good luck!

I'll second MYP's advice. The extract command is the best for removing/isolating elements of an image. If you possess PS6 and would like a detailed explanation on how to use this feature, e-mail me or ask here and I'll explain it's basics.

I used Photoshop's extract tool which is indispensible for this type of work. Much better than using just the laso tool alone (IMO).

Serif also offers the extract tool in their PhotoPlus 7 and 8 programs which are very reasonably priced and do most of what Photshop does for a fraction of the price.

I'm hoping that Jasc offers it in their next version of Paint Shop Pro.

The advice on the Extract tool is great, but she don't have PS 6 or 7. Note the orig. query had to do with the fact that they have Photoshop LE only. That limits them to the lasso because I don't see the Extract function in LE. Regards, Jim N'AZ

There are many ways to take out the bkg, but I highly reccomend using Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, etc. I dont feel (my opinion) that Photodeluxe, or Photoshop LE is quite up to the task, again this is my opinion only.

Here is my attempt at removing your bkg.

Cheers

Leo is right.

If you want to begin dabbling in any sort of serious image editing, you'll need to invest a little in a more robust piece of software than the freebie that came with the cam.

If one cannot afford the somewhat higher cost (but very well worth it) of Photoshop full version, then Leo's recommendation of Jasc is right on. It's only around 100$ and offers most of the more often used features of Photoshop. The investment is very well worth the elimination of frustration experienced with less robust programs.

Hi David,

I would like to know how this is done. I have PS 6.

Thanks so much.

Is Jasc the maker of Paint Shop Pro?
They probably have a trial download?
Thanks to all for the input...

...I have photoshop LE is all.
If you do a significant amount of photo editing, consider investing in the full version of Photoshop. I agree with others that the Extract command is useful for this, especially where hair or animal fur or fine whispy detail needs to be extracted. An example:

There are also some photoshop addons that specialize in image extraction - perhaps one of these will work with LE.
