I have the Nikkor 12-24mm DX. It is a bit better, on average, than its competitors. It's perfectly fine from 12-17mm. At 18-24mm, it's a superb lens. (See the comments on Thom's web site.) There is an unbiased comparison that will be of interest on Nikonians.org. There are many tests. My recollection is that none of the name-brand lenses in this range are dogs.

Generaly comment. Since I replaced my 18-70mm with the 16-85mm, I find I don't use my 12-24mm as much, as 16mm is wide enough (24mm in 35mm equiv.) for the typical shot and the wide end of this lens is pretty good. Still, there are wonderful photos that need more width, just not so many.

The Tokina 11-16 is an amazing lens. I've been using it a lot since I got it. Even though it's very wide, the distortion is very manageable. So is the CA. The best part is that it's built solid and it's sharp as a tack, even out to the corners. I didn't think that I'd need the faster f stop, but after taking this lens out at night to shoot neon and cars, I am really excited about what this lens can do. The only downside I've found to this lens is the short zoom range, but when it's this wide, that really isn't all that important. It's a great lens.

Here's a post with some full size images I took with it.

Don't let the user name fool you, I have a Nikon D300.

I bought the Tokina because I already have the zoom range from 18 thru 24, so the 11-16 is perfect. It is a short range, so I use mostly 11 OR 16. This is a superb lens, regardless of the price. The people that swear by Nikon lenses in these replies are those that already bought them or couldn't get thier hands on a Tokina because of the short supply. It's just as sharp as the Nikon and the price is reasonable compared to the unreasonable price of the 12-24. I do love all the Nikon lense that I have already, but the Tokina 11-16 is a great choice for us wide angle freaks. Dave

Agreed there are no dogs just as there are no Nikkors other than the one mentioned.
