I went to try to update the firmware from V3 to V4 today and can't get the confirmation window to appear (by holding MENU while powering up) as per the instructions -

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=DSLRA700&upd_id=3766&os_id=24

Nothing happens no matter how long I hold the button, the camera just seems to go into regular shooting mode.

I can get to the version display via this 2 button press -
"Press the MENU button and the (display) button simultaneously."

I've even reset all parameters to default, but still can gain no access to the update screen...

I've copied the DSCA700.APP file to a CF card root directory (that I know works) from a Mac and popped it into the A700 - I haven't tried the "Wired" USB update yet, but the CF way isn't working for me.

Has anyone else had this problem or know what's going on?

was the cf freshly formated in the camera? this apparently matters.

1) I think it needs a fully charged battery as well.

2) I copied the download file instead of the uncompressed file initially. Drove me mad until I realized that.

As Zivel says, make sure the CF card is formatted in camera and then copy the firmware onto the CF card and then retry the procedure. Make sure the fw file is in the root directory of the CF card

Obviously, you are doing something wrong - my first guess is that you didn't format your card in the camera before copying the file. After the format, you'll see a file like Sony.something which is to supposed to be there on an empty card. I was careless enough to have a 27% loaded battery (thought it was full) in the cam, and the upgrade told me 'battery failure'...! I put in a fresh one and the update completed without problems...that was very nice of Sony to make that precaution :-) ...good luck!

Apparently it does matter! That was the culprit....a "fresh format" did the trick.

Thanks for the very fast replies - the update screen came up first try and I'm now using V4 happily!

I had exactly the same problem a few days ago, I had not downloaded the
application file to the CF card. Once I did this it worked fine and th V4
firmware loaded fine to the camera.

"Do what they said...that's where I got it wrong too! "

Sony says specifically -
Prepare the recording media (Memory Stick Duo / CF card / Microdrive) by formatting it with the camera. WARNING!!: The recording media must be formatted in the camera. All data on the recording media, including even protected images, will be erased by formatting and cannot be restored.
The CF I was using had been previously formatted... Maybe they should say "fresh reformat" previously formatted media in camera before loading an update onto it, as well then?
No matter, it's working now.
