Hi,

Stupid newbie question. I've taken the plunge and bought a dImage 7i after much careful consideration over the last few weeks (I've lost count of the hours I've spent reading the reviews on this site and also these forums ;-).

The camera is on route. However, I'm looking at some accessories.

Please can somebody explain (in relatively simple terms) what the benefits are of having a UV filter?

Does anybody have any with/without UV type shots that might illustrate it?

I'm not a complete Dig Camera newbie, nor a complete photography newbie, but the more high end/professional side of things is definitely new.

Many thanks for your help and I hope you can tolerate this post ;)

Try this page that I was pointed at, very good in explaining the main filters you might think about using :)

If you decide to go with a UV filter, then the Hoya Pro-1 49mm is ultra slim at 3mm & doesn't vignette on the 7i........

Yes...I just bought the Hoya Pro 1 because my Quantarray was vignetting slightly...The Hoya seems pretty good...although it was about 50 bucks with shipping. the Quantarray was only 15 bucks!

It's also a lot better if you scratch or break the screw on UV filter, instead of the non-screw on and expensive to replace camera lens. That was the big selling point for me. I don't take it off unless I need to.

I just want a camera that works.

It'll keep the lens clean and undamaged. Anything else is a bonus. If you actually use your camera, you will get dust and scratches. With a UV0, you can clean it with your sleeve if you need to, and just chuck it and get a new one when it gets too bad. With the naked lens, OTOH... tsk tsk.

Thanks for all the replies in this thread. I hadn't thought about the protective capabilities of having a UV filter :)

Does anybody know a good UK-based retailer (online if possible) for filters?

Cheers

based in Luton, supply filters and step-up rings for all cameras. The 49 mm thread of the 7i is a standard size. You won't need a step-up ring for a UV but will need a 49/55 mm step-up if you decide to by a circular poloarising filter. The step-up is £4.95 and filters are individually priced. They will post you a catalogue.

May sound stupid, but I put on a Rokunar Haze UV filter I had on another camera. Haven't noticed and vignette, but how can I be sure?

I got my Hoya Pro-1 from the place below, very good service & vost £24.45 inc delivery (arrived next day!) They were doing a 3 for 2 offer on Hoya filters if you want more than just the UV one :)

I am using a skylight-filter for protecting the lens. You can also use a UV-filter. I'm not using it for improving the images. If you are using a cheap filter your images may be "damaged".
