Will the release of the Leica S2 lead to the much rumored Nikon MX format......

I don't know if it will 'lead' to it, given that it was allegedly already in the pipeline. The issue is.. does this mean we'll have to throw wads of cash at Nikon to invest in a whole new line of lenses just to be able to cover the sensor?

After all I cannot see any use in a system "between the worlds". Leica has introduced an "in between" camera with 37,5 mpix and unquestionable advantages for studio photographers - but who needs it in the field? If you are in reportage you use a full-format dslr, if your job is potraying and wedding photography you'll use a Hassi or Leaf or Phase One with a much bigger sensor unit. If Nikon MX is something similar things become even worse because it makes the final decision much more difficult.

But many development projects don't make it to production. Leica's new system makes Nikon MX format more likely to me - vendors see the potential. Clearly, there is a rush to market now. I wonder if some of the prototypes sighted ahead of the D3 launch might actually have been MX?

... No Regrets ...

Leica S2 a development project that won't reach production? I don't think so. Since leica is providing lenses for phase one and their new camera system they already have a market for them. I think larger sensor size is just a natural development. Current sensors in DSLR are out resolving most of the available lens. Far as the cost most photographers don't go out and buy a new system or back they lease it. Its part of the cost of doing business. Problem is that now professionals need to do this every couple of years and now it seems change systems as well. Tons of great older hasselblad and mamiya stuff out there but pretty much a door stop for professionals. Will Leica break into the pro market? Not to likely they never have despite producing wonderful cameras for years. Will Nikon/Canon lot change because of them. No. To different markets and tools. Will I have to pay $20,000 in the near future for a camera system? Maybe but clients don't pay me anymore if I do.
