I am new to this forum-i am usually hanging out over at the Nikon digital forum, but this question fits better here.

i saw that Adobe is packaging a $30 rebate in the Elements box for those who are owners of one of several other editing softwares. adobe says i need to provide a "registered serial number"

i tried to register my Picture It with Microsoft, but the product id bounced--the product id number has the letters OEM in the middle. so do i get this from Dell or? since it came already on my computer, is it already registered? i just want to be sure that Adobe accepts what i send them.

also noticed that Amazon is giving an additional $40 rebate as well, so this could be quite a little finesse if i can figure it out quickly.

many thanks for any insight--especially from anyone who has done this particular deal under same circumstances.

well, i guess that my question was really just too dumb-i'll be on mt way now.

There seems to be a number of rebates offered for elements on amazon.com Here is a page in case you haven't seen it already. And save another $5 using code: SAVESAVESAVE

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/feature/-/292115/techbargainscom/103-0705131-8188620
I saw this on techbargains.com. Hope it helps

Margaret,

It is possible that it is already registered. Do you have any license/registration number for the product?

If not, try this, click on Help, then About (name of program), this usually shows the program, version, and serial number.

Worth a shot.

Thanks, Kevin. I did that already-that' s how i got the product identification number- (they did not call it a serial number, but i am assuming that it what it is). When i tried to use this number on the registration screen with Microsoft, it was not accepted.

i guess bottom line is that this is still a good deal, with or without the extra $30, especially with the coupon vk so kindly pointed out. so maybe i will just go ahead and order it and fiddle with the serial numbers down the road.

it would be nice to solve this little mystery, tho. the PictureIt! came in a Works Suite 2002 from Microsoft, and as i said, it was pre-installed by Dell on my computer.

I also used Picture It! as my qualifying product, which I also received pre-loaded on a Dell computer. I don't recall exactly what the instructions were for getting the Adobe rebate, but I know I sent them the number off the MS Works 2000 disk that came with my Dell, and the rebate check arrived from Adobe.

Sorry not to have responded sooner, but I've been spending my time amused and bemused by the discussions of religion and politics going on on the open talk forum.

Thanks so much, Mike! I am so glad you saw my post!

In the meantime, i downloaded a trial version of PS Elements. I got what i understand is a common occurrence--an error message on launch "unable to continue because of a hardware or system error."

According to the FAQ's on the user to user PS El forum on Adobe's site, i am supposed to "deselect 'close palette to shortcuts well' in the hints flyout menu, then close the hints palette.

To get elements running again, then i am to hold down shift+ctrl+alt keys immediately after launching elements. is this what you had to do?

this is a tad confusing for such a greenhorn as i am! I keep flailing away, tho...

As the late Gilda Raner often said "Nevermind!" Altho i thought these instructions sounded confusing, it is merely because i had absollutely no familiarity with what PS EL looks like. one i took a look, it made perfect sense, atho there was no need for the shift+ctrl+alt part...

in the first 5 minutes, i fixed a damaged photo that had been hopeless in PictureIt! It pretty much made a believer out of me!

one last thing--any advice on getting on with the learning curve of moving from an elementary program like PictureIt! to Elements? Did you buy a book or read a particular tutorial? I have already seen a couple that looked good.

Thanks, Mike, again very much!

Margaret. The tutorial that comes with Elements is very good. Go through it completely and see if it doesn't give you a complete understanding of the application.

There are a number of books recommended in threads on this site. The one I own, and can reccomend heartily, is called Photoshop Elements Solutions, by Mikkel Aaland. Most books are organized around the features of PSE. Aalsnd's book has some of that, but there are also chapters on how do do various things using the PSE features--e.g., how to touch up portraits (everything from redeye to wrinkle removal and slimming), how to improve landscapes, etc. The list price is about $40, but I understand it's discounted heavily on amazon.com.

You also may want to take a look at a site called Jay Aarich's Photoshop Elements Tips: http://www.arraich.com/elements/psE_intro.htm

I reccomend that you spend some time with the basics, but learn to use layers as soon as you feel ready.

Above all, have fun!

Come to think of it, I believe I sent in a photocopy of the MS Works disk that had Picture It! on it.

Well, the order is gone, and altho overight the price at Amazon went back to the ubiquitous $99, from last night;s $82+, i got my questions answered and felt comfortable with the purchase i made--sometimes it doesn't pay to be cautious. got the Peter iNova book about Nikon Coolpix digicams and pre-ordered the soon-to-be-released Thom Hogan book on the Coolpix series, too. All in all, i did a little damage, but my actual outlay after rebates, coupons (thanks again, vk) etc will be less than walking into a store and buying Ps Elements all by itself! The joys of capitalism! :-)
