I am having a problem with my new 1D communicating with my computer when I connect it. I am using an Adaptec Firewire card and the provided cables from Canon. I have Windows 98 second edition. Has anybody else had this problem?

Matt-

What is the problem?

A. Is the card recognized in Device Manager & is the driver properly installed?

B. When you plug in the 1D does the New Device Wizard come up?

C. Have you properly installed the 1D TWAIN driver?

yes, yes and yes.

Mmmm, OK, so what's the problem?

It says camera not connected when everything is on and connected.

With camera on and connected, try going into the device manager and have it scan for hardware changes. Might help.

Did that. It did not help.

Does anyon eknow if Win 98 SE even supports firewire? I thought that you needed ME, 2000 or XP to use firewire.

Alex-

As long as your FW card has OS specific drivers:

Microsoft® Windows 98SE, Windows Me,Windows 2000, or Windows XP operating system

My choice = SoundBlaster Audigy soundcard with integrated FW:

ALL Win OS, Linux, Mac OS, etc drivers supported, saves burning another PCI slot, works like a charm.

Matt,

I'm having the same problem. Did you ever find a solution? (I also have an Adaptec Firewire card). But... I fiddled around (I enabled non-supported devices in the settings for the device) and got it to work, I thought. That was yesterday. Today, it doesn't work, again.

I'm also running Windows 98 SE. Is anyone out there successfully using that OS? (Canon support blamed it on the firewire card and said they couldn't help me.) If yes, what brand/model of firewire card are you using?

Canon suggests in their documentation that you can't have other firewire devices connected. Considering that firewire is a standard that supports multiple devices, that sounds fishy to me.

Help would be appreciated.

Ken
