Advice for Hawaii Trip

Hi Debra,

A CPL is a circular polarizer. Are you aware that Kilauea is erupting and that Kona is down wind of Kilauea? When we were there in July, we stayed away from that side of the island to stay out of the VOG. It is pretty nasty and light exposure makes you feel like you have a mild saw throat. About ½ of Volcano’s National Park is closed due to VOG and the side that is open is the side closer to Hilo. You are correct about the falls on the Hilo side and there very pretty and the glide you have will get you to them. We spent a whole day going from fall to fall. The next day we saw them all from a helicopter in 15 minutes. Do go to the viewing area for where the lava is flowing into the pacific. Plan to arrive about an hour before dusk and bring a flashlight so you can hike out. This is an incredible sight. There are many fine hikes in the park and we had a ball doing them.

Have a wonderful time!

We were on Mauii last year and the only thing I regretted not to have bought and brought with me was an underwater case for my SLR. Aquapac is making some inexpensive ones and you get much more than with a point-and-shoot camera (although Allen2003 has shown some pretty awesome pictures).

I made a mistake of buying one of those one-use water-proof film cameras and the pictures were horrible.

Have fun!

for all the info, I will being going to a camera class tonight at one of our Camera stores here and they are very knowledgable and we see about getting the ND filters there, I already have a polarizing filter for the 18-200 so just need one for the other lens.

To Dan:

Thank you again for sharing. I will e:mail you for more information. I am definitely excited. I had to put my nikon in the shop but I am taking my G9 and may take the Contax rangefinder. I am still trying to decide on the d90 or the 300 when I return. I keep cameras a long time and the 300 is closer in size to my d70 than the D90. I could be statisfied with either.
