chdk are working in a not official 40D functions upgrade, but i think it should be more useful to show hi-res pictures on LCD preview than to have video on a 40D.

They are so good camcorder, good p&s camera and not so good phones with audio and video, why on a DSLR?
Then also TV, MP3, Phone on it? Many super gadget already do that.

I'm also sure that Canon, with 50D out soon and 60D on work, won't release new official firmware update for 40D.
So, go ahead DataGhost team!

So you have it with you, and can shoot both stills and video without having to dig out or haul around another device. I sometimes take my wife's S3IS just to shoot video while I have my 5D. That's a pain.

It's real. You could also just link to the video (which has been posted here several times already) instead of putting it on youtube under your own name without any credits.

i can understand, of course if they are able to do it, no problem.

I've read many threads of people who want video in a DSLR, so i think Nikon D90 will get success....

1. Hook the camera to a PC and capture the live image displayed on the screen.

2. Take a series of shots and then use them as frames in a video - I've done this for some interesting time-lapse type videos.

But I would like real video capability in the DSLR so that I didn't take my S2 IS or SD800 along for video.

As I said you via mail, my fault! I didn't want to offend anyone and now I added your name as unique ©! So let me know if you still want I remove it! And furthermore I didn't know the link has been already posted here: a friend of mine just forwarded the video since he knows I own the 40D while he has the 5D!

Simple. For the same reasons you choose a DSLR for photographs. A DSLR has a gigantic sensor that's capable of incredible depth of field control. A DSLR allows interchangeable optics. A DSLR has great high ISO performance for low noise in dark situations. All these same benefits apply to video, and allow for much more cinematic results than you could ever achieve with even an expensive dedicated camcorder.

all next generation of consumer grade DSLR will introduce video, since 2009, as D90 do just now.

They won't have, for at least a couple of years, nothing comparable to what today have a 300$ camcorder, but they will attract the p&s users.

This is ok, but i'd like also to make a good expresso and to have delays and flanger for my electric guitars with 2000$ gear.

What makes you say that? The main thing lacking is autofocus because the best autofocus on a DSLR only works when the sensor is blocked, but other than that, you have a better sensor and better lenses, and more control, compared to any consumer camcorder.

another video DSLR fan?
Some camcorder differencies:
-price
-audio stereo hi-Fi
-optical zoom range
-variable shutter
-in camera effect and editing
-tilting LCD
-mini DV and cards
-compact size
-compression algorythm
and more

Of course quite all is possible in the electronic fields, but only if commercial strategies give the permit. They will do it when market-users will ask for an integration of all functions in only one gear, that will happens not before next couple of years, also more. 60D in 2009 will show some video options, but still far from actual standard of video. Of course, i suppose. We'll see....
Thanks to Jeff experience.

-price: Not an iissue as we'll be buying the camera anyway, unless this adds noticeably to the cost of the camera.

-audio stereo hi-Fi: If my S2 IS can have stereo sound, it should be cheap and easy to add to a DSLR, even if it is not good enough to capture a concert in CD quality (don't need that anyway).

-optical zoom range: That wide zoom range comes at the cost of image quality. For this purpose, I prefer a lower range, better quality, zoom.

-variable shutter: I don't know enough about this with video (never used it) to comment. But if I haven't used it so far with camcorders, I wouldn't miss it on a DSLR.

-in camera effect and editing: After intially playing with in-camera effects on my first camcorders I've never used it. I prefer to have the best video I can capture and then add effects in software.

-tilting LCD: Importance depends on type of shooting.

-mini DV and cards; More and more camcorders are switching to flash memory any way.

-compact size; DSLR with video is way ahead: size = 0.

-compression algorythm: Purely a matter of how video is implemented.

I have never suggested that the DSLR should be bought/brought in place of a camcorder, but that having video capability when your primary purpose is shooting still shots means that you don't have to carry a separate camcorder "just in case". If you really are going out with the intent of shooting video, you should use a video camera and not a DSLR that can take video.

Ok Jeff, i agree, with some reserve.

Best Buy have very good camcorders in 300-400$ range, a lot better than any D90 present and future. Have you ever made some movie with a decent digital video camera, also not HD? It seems you don't know this kind of machine, if you appreciate the ridicolous test showed in that link.
With respect.

I didn't bother with the link. I have a Canon 3 CCD digital camcorder (a GL1) and a small, consumer level, camcorder. But over the years, I've used them less and less.

As I said, the best advantage of having video built in to a D-SLR is that you have a video recorder with you if you need it.
