Hi,
Has anyone experience problems before with this combination? I am experiencing:-
  • AF not working
  • Aperture/Shutter speed weirdness as in rapidly changing hutter/aperture settings even when lenscap is on.
  • Shutter cannot be released, and even if it can, exposure turns out wrongly.
Have cleaned all the contacts on body, TC and lens, and problem went away for a while, but its back and looks like its staying.

Have tried the following combos:-
D1x + 300f/4AFS + TC14E-II = weird
D1x + 300f/4AFS = okay
D1x + 300f/4AFS + Sigma TC = okay
D1x + 80-200f/2.8AFS + TC14E-II = okay
F5 + 300f/4AFS + TC14E-II = okay

TIA!
Darren.

Will it because of the f stop is equal or greater than 5.6? If i recall correctly, some digital camera's AF will not work after 5.6

good luck

Seems like an electrical contact problem to me. Make sure there is a snug fit between the TC and lens, and to the camera body. Clean contacts if necessary.

Bjorn,

Have cleaned the contacts a few times - the problem goes away for a while, then returns. This last time, even after a cleaning, the lens/TC combo still refuses to work.

How much play would you say constitutes a snug fit? With the TC, i find that I can twist the TC in the mount about + - 1mm - a very noticeable movement.

I will go back and check out the snugness of the TC vis-a-vis the other lenses and bodies.

Thanks for the info.

Add me to the list with the exact same symptoms. The first one worked for about a week, started to be intermittent and then crashed. I returned it for a replacement which was even worse.

Carefully cleaned the contacts and it worked till yesterday when the AF quit for a short time.

A call to Nikon (USA) and they suggested sending in the camera, 300f/4 and TC14E-II which I wasn't willing to do at this time. I would add a couple of symptoms:

-battery life seems to be shorter with the TC14E-II on?? (not positive about this)
-focus seems to be slower, especially if it is a major change

-When mounting the TC to the camera it sounds like a rachet wrench, much louder and rougher than when mounting any other lens...

sort of glad to know that I am not the only one experiencing this.

As for the battery, I also noticed that it tends to deplete faster when the TC is on - quickly goes to half-charge even when its just been taken off the charger. Altho I can still take a good number of shots (enough NEFs to fill up a 1GB MD and more), the half-charge battery level does sort of crimp the workflow a bit as the shutter/aperture settings cant be seen unless you keep depressing the shutter button.

Looks like the combo has to go in to Nikon for servicing soon :(

I use a film SLR with the 300f/4-TC14EII combo and also noticed other idiosyncrasies with it.

when I used it in cold weather and it started drizzling a tiny bit, after a while, AF-continuous tracking basically started the fail and the camera couldn't track on a F5 or F70 and i think the tc14e was 'louder' than normal (tho' i could definitely be wrong about that) Earlier in the day when it wasn't drizzling, AF-C worked perfectly. This is despite reasonable light 1/125 f5.6 iso 100.

later in the day, after i brought the camera indoors (at a train station), I tried out the combo again and AF-C tracked perfectly despite the light level being 2-3 stops lower than the earlier level of 1/125 f5.6. I used the lens several times since but never in a drizzle and its been working fine.

I'm not using the TC14E so have no experience. My combination is D1x + 300f/AFS + Kenko (or Tamron, they are the same) Pro 2x TC. This combination works perfect and the Eixf even reported the focal length (ie 600mm) and aperture (i.e. 2 stops down) correctly.

Just curious but if you use the TC14EII how does it make noise at all?? My TC14EII has no moving parts for the focus system-only for the aperture. I have this combo and use it on my N80 body all the time and have had no issues at all.
